Shack naming elicits memories

An open letter to the residents of Laguna:

A heartfelt thank you to all of you who participated in the naming contest for the new center at the former Pottery Shack site. An astounding 441 different names were submitted! Counting duplications, there were nearly 1,000 entries.

It was obvious a great deal of time, care and emotion went into the process, and we’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading each and every entry. A committee has been formed to review all the names and recommend a final selection, which we hope will be announced prior to the end of the year.

Although the Pottery Shack will be missed by many, support for the new center’s open courtyard, eclectic design and distinctive character was nearly unanimous.

Many entries were accompanied by personal stories and anecdotes. A few examples:

* “My husband’s grandparents retired in Laguna Beach on Cress Street. He stayed with them every summer. In 1960 we were married and moved to Laguna in 1966. I bought my first set of dishes there in 1960. I went to work at the Pottery Shack in 1970 and was there until 1983. My son also worked there in high school and college. The Pottery Shack was a great place to work.”

* “As a lifeguard in Laguna Beach 1944-46, I remember Eiler coming to our small cabin in North Laguna when Mom prepared dinner. Indeed it was a fun time in this one-room cabin.”

* “I have lived in Laguna Beach for 40 years and knew Mr. Eiler Larsen personally. He was such a nice man. The place that you are renovating I have always looked upon as the center of town when I am arriving or leaving. I think you have done a great job in remodeling.”

Again, thank you all. And watch for news in the coming weeks.
