Lucky Charms claim second

Girls’ Under-10 soccer team is the runner-up at area tournament.Regional champion Lucky Charms, a girls’ Under-10 team out of AYSO Region 56, won three matches at last weekend’s Area 11-K tournament to earn a second-place finish in their division.

Under coaches Angelo and Cindy Guinasso, the Lucky Charms began the area event with a 3-0 shutout of the Santa Ana Butterflies out of Region 517. Carly Kaplan, Maya McGinnis and Karen Kisner scored goals, and keepers Jessica Cruise and Danielle Rini and defenders Katie Conway and Gianna Guinasso helped shut down the Butterflies’ offense.

In its second outing, the Lucky Charms edged the Wild Bunch of Region 55, 2-1. Katie Lespier scored both Charms goals and Carly Kaplan picked up an assist.

The squad was charmed a third time as it posted a 4-2 victory over the Pink Panthers of Region 143C.

Katie Lespier and Katie Moss teamed on the first Lucky Charm goal of the match and Kaplan, Moss and Lespier each posted goals in the second quarter to complete the scoring for Lucky Charms.

The three wins sent Lucky Charms into the championship match, where they faced the Green-Go’s of Region 177.

Neither team was able to score in regulation play, with Brooke Luciani and Sara Zylstra coming up big on defense for the Lucky Charms.

The Green-Go’s scored the only goal of the match in overtime to pull out a 1-0 victory.

In girls’ youth basketball:

The Saint Simon and Jude girls basketball team placed second in their first tourney of the 2005-06 season.

The squad traveled to St. John Episcopal in Rancho Santa Margarita for the three-day tournament, which began Friday. In Sunday’s championship final, host St. John’s defeated Saint Simon and Jude, 37-24.

Arielle Freleaux, Jacquelyn Machado and Kelsey Cunningham represented Saint Simon and Jude on the all-tournament team.

The team, which went undefeated last year, is coached by Karen Foster and assistant coach Bob Machado.
