Mustangs’ polo coach resigns
postiffTim Postiff steps down to pursue postgraduate degree, but will remain Costa Mesa’s athletic director.Costa Mesa High’s Tim Postiff has stepped down as the school’s boys’ varsity water polo coach.
Postiff, who is also the Mustangs’ athletic director, said he would also resign as the school’s varsity swimming and girls’ water polo coach after those seasons are completed. He said he might stay on and assist the girls’ water polo program next season.
Postiff, who just completed his fourth year as the boys’ water polo coach, said he intends to go back to school and pursue a postgraduate degree, and wanted to cut back on his workload at Costa Mesa. He has a bachelor’s degree in English from Southeast Missouri State and a master’s degree in physical education, which he completed 2 1/2 years ago.
“I’m the type of guy who always has to be learning something,” Postiff said. “I don’t have any kids, so I figure, why not now?”
An English teacher at Costa Mesa, Postiff coached aquatics on campus for three years before being named athletic director last summer. Prior to the Mustangs, he had been an aquatics coach at Mark Keppel High in Alhambra and at Citrus College.
The Mustangs’ boys’ water polo team finished second in the Golden West League in the fall, and lost in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division II playoffs. Kyle Thorsness, Costa Mesa’s top player, was named the Golden West League’s most valuable player after scoring 157 goals this season.
The boys’ water polo job has already been posted on the CIF Southern Section’s website.
