OCC states its case

sports briefs Orange Coast College’s volleyball team was well-rewarded as the California Community College Commission on Athletics released its all-state and all-region teams.
Pirates outside hitter Kiwi Winkler was named to the all-state team and the American Volleyball Coaches Assn. All-American first team. Coach Chuck Cutenese was named the Southern California Coach of the Year.
The Pirates (21-0) will play host to Victor Valley College in the second round of the state playoffs tonight. The winner will advance to the state tournament next weekend at Selland Arena on the Fresno State campus.
ANTEATERS GET ACCOLADES
Three UC Irvine men’s water polo players received All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation accolades, following the team’s 18-12 season.
UC Irvine’s top offensive threats, senior Dreason Barry and junior Tim Hutton, were All-MPSF second-team selections. Barry, a 6-foot-9 All-American, led the Anteaters with 66 goals. The senior has notched 212 in his career at UC Irvine. Hutten added 64 goals for UCI this year.
Nate White, who tallied 38 goals this season, was an honorable mention selection for the Anteaters, who finished conference play with a record of 6-2 and lost in the semifinals of the conference tournament.
LOCAL GRIZZLIES HONORED
A pair of Newport Harbor High grads were honored by the Big Sky Conference in its all-conference football teams.
Montana defensive tackle Alan Saenz was named to the all-conference first team, and teammate Jeff Marshall was a second-team offense selection at center.
The Grizzlies’ season ended last weekend with a 35-21 loss to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in the first round of the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs.
SUPER BOWL SATURDAY
Orange County Junior All-American Football will hold its championship games today at Orange Coast College.
Newport-Mesa Junior All-American Football is the host league for the championships.
There will be six games, starting at 8:15 a.m. with the Junior Clinic title game and ending with the Midget championship contest at 7:30 p.m.
SIGNUPS
The Newport Beach Recreation and Senior Services Department is holding registration for youth basketball throughout the month of December for the winter league and in May for the summer league. The cost is $45 -- $50 for nonresidents.
In addition, track and field is offered for boys and girls ages 7 to 14. Registration starts in March and the cost is $10 -- $15 for nonresidents.
The Newport Beach Recreation and Senior Services Department offers a wide variety of athletic programs.
