Extreme trots off with a turkey title

Girls’ under-11 team wins Surf City Open.HB Extreme, an under-11 girls’ AYSO Plus team out of region 56, captured first place in its division at last weekend’s 2005 Surf City Open Turkey Tournament.

The Extreme played in the under-12 division.

Extreme 3, South Huntington Beach 1

Isabella Shaw opened up the scoring for the Extreme, who led from start-to-finish in defeating South Huntington Beach.

Shaw’s goal came off a pass from Zoe Zimmerer. Another score by Kelly Nemes, a shot set up by Hannah Grunbaum and Megan Pasternak, gave the Extreme a 2-0 lead.

Lauren Shklanko booted in a goal for South Huntington Beach to trim the lead to 2-1, but Zimmerer scored off a steal by Jessica Malane to seal the Extreme win.

Defensively, Nicolette Lambright led South Huntington Beach. Sydney Stout, Tiana Kiriaki, Melanie Valentin and keeper Nikki Watkins spearheaded the Extreme defense.

Extreme 1, San Clemente 1

San Clemente took an early 1-0 lead, but the goalkeeping of the Extreme’s Nikki Watkins and midfield play of Ashley Ramey and Rhyanne Addam wouldn’t yield another goal.

The Extreme scored the equalizer when Zoe Zimmerer came up with a strong crossing pass to Megan Pasternak, whose kick tied the match.

Watkins made a key save in goal with two minutes left to preserve the 1-1 tie.

Extreme 1, Fountain Valley 0

In the division final, Chloe Kossick’s goal midway through the second half spelled the difference in a match dominated by defense.

Jennie Bergsma and Tiana Kiriaki controlled the middle for the Extreme, and Eliana Rosen did the same for Fountain Valley, as neither team was able to score in the opening half.

Kossick’s goal, which she punched in from the left side of the goal, was set up by a steal by Ashley Ramey.

Sydney Stout, Kelly Nemes and Isabella Shaw helped to shut out Fountain Valley.

The HB Extreme is composed of Zoe Zimmerer, Nikki Watkins, Hannah Grunbaum, Sydney Stout, Isabella Shaw, Ashley Ramey, Megan Pasternak, Kelly Nemes, Chloe Kossick, Tiana Kiriaki, Jennie Bergsma, Jessica Malane, Rhyanne Addam, Melanie Valentin and coaches Tracy Ramey and Vince Zimmerer.

In club soccer action:

Gold Coast Xtreme advances in cup play

Gold Coast Xtreme, an Under-13 Silver Division club soccer team from Huntington Beach, has advanced to the round of 32 in Coast Soccer League’s League Cup action.

The Xtreme advanced by winning its pool. The squad played the Gold-level Blazers of Santa Clarita to a scoreless tie, then shut out the first-place Bronze-level Wave of Oxnard.

At the outset of the tournament, 141 teams competed in pool play.

In the victory over Oxnard, forward Devon Shinn scored the winning goal with three minutes left in the game, and fullback Paige Grigus hammered a shot over the goalie’s head from outside to seal the victory.

The Xtreme got outstanding forward and midfield play from Hannah Mais, Alexa Georgatsos and Shannon Wright.

Defensively, Nicole Camarillo, Aubrey Dawson, Brianna Henderson, Katherine Zeltner and keeper Halle Bissin, who made numerous stops, preserved the two shutouts.

The Xtreme returns to League Cup action Saturday at the Polo Field Complex in San Juan Capistrano, where it is seeking to earn a spot among the tournament’s sweet 16.

South Coast Code Red second at tourney

South Coast Code Red girls’ under-14 team placed second in its division at the Nike Harvest Cup Thanksgiving tournament.

Code Red captured first-place in its pool by winning four matches. Sweeper Jodi Hwang was awarded the Coach’s Trophy for outstanding defensive play throughout the tournament.

Kirsten Marony, Erika Longoria, Rachel Pasternak and Kiley Cravens all scored goals, and Cravens and Alyssa Duren each had an assist for Code Red.

Alison Hensley scored what turned out to be the game-winner, and Code Red’s tough defense -- led by stopper Nancy Mendez, fullbacks Kelly Mitsumori, Rebecca Cruz and Erica Cabibbo, sweeper Jodi Hwang and goalies Lacie Carver and Alyssa Duren, earned the shutout.

Code Red 3, Crescenta Valley 1

Erika Longoria scored a hat trick to power Code Red into the semifinal round.

Code Red 2, Cerritos United 0

Andrea Ecker broke a scoreless game by scoring early in the second half when she picked up the deflection of teammate Lauren Hanson’s shot on goal. Erika Longoria, from a mid-fielder position, scored on a long, high kick that bounced over the head of the Cerritos United goalie.

Upland Spirit 3, Code Red 0

Code Red’s bid for the tournament championship was ended by Upland Spirit, which took a 1-0 halftime lead and went on to post the shutout victory.
