Eagles, Mustangs receive honors

Five Estancia High girls’ volleyball players are All-Golden West League selections, while Costa Mesa has four selections.Five athletes from Estancia High and four from Costa Mesa have been named to the All-Golden West League teams in girls’ volleyball.

For Estancia, junior middle blocker Jaye Hellmich, senior outside hitter Taylor Brown and junior setter Stacie Watson were first-team selections. Sophomore middle blocker Olivia Schow and sophomore outside hitter Sara Braunsdorf made the second team for the Eagles.

Watson was a second-team pick the previous two seasons, and Hellmich was a second-team selection last year.

Costa Mesa had senior outside hitter Tracy Bjelland, junior middle blocker Danielle Morton and senior middle blocker Heather Williams on the first team. The Mustangs also had senior defensive specialist Caitlyn Duffy on the second team.

It was Bjelland’s second consecutive first-team selection, and Morton’s second year as a second-team pick.

Estancia (15-7) finished second in the Golden West League, coming within two points of earning a co-championship with Ocean View, and advanced to the CIF Southern Section Division 3-A playoffs. The Eagles lost to Orange Lutheran, 25-15, 25-13, 25-18, in the first round of the postseason.

Costa Mesa (12-14) placed second in league and also reached the Division 3-A playoffs. The Mustangs were ousted by Rosary High, 25-9, 25-9, 25-12, in a wild-card match.

Ocean View senior middle blocker Katelin Potter and senior setter Hayley Hanson shared the league’s most valuable player award. The Seahawks reached the second round of the Division 3-AA playoffs before losing to Pomona in four games.

Ocean View had the most honorees on the all-league list with eight, followed by Estancia’s five.
