Laguna Beach club polo team downs North Irvine
Other games did not go as well for the boys’ under-14 team, which also fell to Corona del Mar and Capo Valley.The Laguna Beach Age Group Water Polo boys’ 14-and-under team won the final match of a three-match weekend schedule by pounding North Irvine, 19-9, in a five-period match at Laguna Beach High.
David Brunner and Nolan McConnell tied for Laguna scoring honors with four goals each.
Robby Quellmalz scored three goals, Robert Chew, Spencer Dodson and Brent Donenfeld each scored twice and Casey Connors and Trevor Bass each had one goal.
Laguna goalie Peter Weidner blocked six shots.

Corona del Mar 7, Laguna 5
Laguna’s offense didn’t get on the scoreboard until the third period, but it still managed to tie the score. In the end, though, host Corona del Mar scored three consecutive goals to pull away.
Laguna couldn’t crack the scoreboard in the first half, despite an assault on the Corona del Mar goal with shot attempts by Hunter French, Cole Kennedy, Brent Donenfeld and goalie Peter Weidner. Weidner blocked four shot attempts in the opening half.
Laguna tied the score at 3-3 in the third period. Robby Quellmalz netted a goal from mid-pool. Nolan McConnell scored off a pass from Spencer Dodson and later scored again off another pass from Dodson, the second goal set up on a steal by Quellmalz.
Quellmalz, Robert Chew and David Brunner came up with several steals and limited Corona del Mar to a single goal in the period.
Laguna’s final two goals came when Dodson scored on a back-handed shot from the set position, and Brent Donenfeld scored off a pass from Derek Knott.
Capo Valley 12, Laguna 7
In its second match of the day at Corona del Mar, Capo Valley scored three goals in the fourth period to pull away to the win.
David Brunner scored three goals, Nolan McConnell scored twice and Spencer Dodson and Zach Riegler each scored once. Peter Weidner had five saves in the first half for Laguna.
