Tax Forum set

for Oct. 28

City officials will discuss the proposed half-cent tax increase at a forum to be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 28 in the City Council Chamber, 505 Forest Ave.

Village Laguna and the Laguna Beach branches of the League of Women Voters and the American Assn. of University Women will host the forum.

“We encourage the public to attend,” Village Laguna President Doug Reilly said.

City Council members and City Manager Ken Frank will discuss the need for the increase, which will be used to fund projects and programs that otherwise would be delayed or eliminated because of the diversion of city resources to the repairs of the public infrastructure destroyed in the June 1 landslide in Bluebird Canyon. The increase will also raise the nucleus of an emergency fund as a hedge against future disasters.

Gary Waldrin announced at the Tuesday council meeting the formation of a committee to support Measure A, the tax increase on the one-item Dec. 13 ballot for Laguna Beach residents only.

“Without Measure A, services will suffer,” Waldrin said. “We believe Measure A is the best way to address the costs. It’s a nickel on $10, an investment in the future.”
