Code Red wins two games to remain in first

Local girls’ soccer team beats Irvine, Bayern to stay atop standings in Silver Central bracket.South Coast Code Red, a girls’ under-14 soccer team, scored a pair of victories over the weekend to solidify its first-place standing in the Silver Central bracket of the Coast Soccer League.

Code Red 3, FC Irvine 1

The Code Red defensive unit -- led by sweeper Jodi Hwang, keeper Tiffany Van Tress and fullbacks Rebecca Cruz and Lauren Hanson -- kept Irvine off the scoreboard in a scoreless first half.

In the second half, a corner kick by Code Red’s Osiris Ceja landed in front of the Irvine goal. After the ball bounced off several players, teammate Alli Budd gained possession and knocked it into the goal for a 1-0 lead.

Ceja later picked up another assist with a cross to Andrea Ecker, whose well-placed shot got past the Irvine goalie. After Irvine scored to narrow the gap to 2-1, Kirsten Marony gave Code Red some breathing room when she scored off a pass from Ecker.

Code Red 2, FC Bayern 1

Alison Hensley posted a pair of goals, and Ashley Haprov and forwards Rachel Pasternak and Erika Longoria had assists for Code Red. Kelly Mitsumori and Breanne Justice helped lead the Code Red attack by playing both offense and defense.

Ligers 1, Rubber Duckies 0

The shutout pushed the division-leading Ligers’ record to 6-0 on the season. Megan Armstrong took a pass from Ashlie Ryan and posted the winning goal midway through the third quarter. Allison Steinbach had several saves in goal for the Ligers in recording the shutout.

Under-10 Division

Red Hot Spicy Chicks 1, Soccer Sisters 1

An evenly played match between the Soccer Sisters and Red Hot Spicy Chicks ended in a tie. Devon Graber scored in the first half to give the Soccer Sisters the lead; her goal was set up by the play of Jamie Fox and Simone Corkett. The Red Hot Spicy Chicks tied it up late in the game on a goal by Mackenzie Leckey. Sarah Chacon, Maddie Fox and Jessyca Lackey defended the net for the Soccer Sisters in the first half. Veteran keeper Alex Holloway and rookie Krista Apardian took over in the second half, with Apardian stopping six shots on goal in the third quarter. Kayla Winsatt and keeper Brooke Delgleize helped limit the Soccer Sisters to a single goal, and Ashley Yount and Haley Vedas also played key roles for the Red Hot Spicy Chicks.

Teal Dolphins 3, Green Dragons 1

Forward Diana Schwene scored two goals and midfielder Hannah MacNew scored once to lead the Teal Dolphins. Teal Dolphin fullbacks Nicole Halverson, Jessica Johancsik, Maria Steadmon and Cameron Moore -- along with keepers Ariel Thelander, Carly Illeck and Madeline Bragg -- shut out the Green Dragons through the first three quarters. The Green Dragons scored their only goal on a shot by Emily Thiem.

Under-12 Division

Knockouts 2, Mad Dogs 1

In the final minute of the game, Briana Montgomery took a pass from Nicky Gonzalez to score the game-winning goal and lift the Knockouts to victory.

The Knockouts survived an early flurry from an aggressive Mad Dogs’ offense, as Knockouts goalies Bethany Treskes and Alissa Mowrey stopped five shots in the first half.

Gonzalez took a pass from Lindsay Conlisk to score the match’s first goal and gain a 1-0 lead for the Knockouts.

Just before the half, the Mad Dogs answered with a goal to tie the score, 1-1.

Allison McCaughtry, Lauren Franco and Jessica Alvarez turned in strong defensive performances for the Knockouts.
