Sea Kings defeated in consolation final

CdM national invitational girls tennis for SundayCorona del Mar finishes 10th out of 16 teams in national invitational at the Balboa Bay Club.NEWPORT BEACH -- The Corona del Mar national tennis invitational finished up Saturday, with many of the best girls teams in California competing against each other. Unfortunately, the field was too strong for the Newport-Mesa area teams.

Corona del Mar High’s squad finished 10th out of 16 teams in the event at the Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club. The Sea Kings finished with a 2-2 record in the tournament.

In its first match of the day, CdM defeated Dana Hills, 7-2. The Sea Kings took an early lead with three doubles wins over the Dolphins, ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section Division I. Kelly McKitterick and Lindsay Norman swept their set, 6-0.

In the second match, Corona del Mar fell in the consolation finals to Pacific Coast League foe Laguna Beach, 6-3. However, the match will have no bearing on league standings.

Rachel Bryan and Lindsay Norman lost, 6-4, while the team of Hayley and Miranda Young won, 7-6, with a 7-4 tiebreaker.

Lindsay Zotovich and Danielle Kaiden lost their first match of the tournament, 7-6. Up, 6-5, in the tiebreaker, Laguna Beach’s Lauren Thigpen hit a low return near the feet of Zotovich that was unreachable for the freshman. The duo finished the tournament with a 3-1 record.

Freshman Flora Lee was the first Sea King to finish her singles match, winning 6-1.

Peninsula defeated Torrey Pines, 5-4, in the championship match for the title.

* Sage Hill School finished 15th in the tournament, defeating El Toro, 6-3, and losing to Santa Margarita, 5-4.
