Holiday palette competition for children to open
The City of Laguna Beach Arts Commission Children’s Holiday
Palette Exhibition is open to locals ages 5 to 17. Several paper
palettes will be chosen to be mounted on wooden palettes to be
displayed in December at City Hall in a special exhibition.
Entrants will be provided with a paper template on which to paint
or draw original artwork. Templates are available at
o7www.lagunabeachcity.netf7.
All appropriate submitted palettes will be on display at City Hall
during the holiday season.
The artist’s signature, age, and date should be placed on the
front left. Include the palette indent as part of the design. There
are no restrictions on the subject matter, but religious symbols are
discouraged. Laguna Outreach Community Arts helped make the project
possible.
The deadline is 5 p.m. Nov. 11. Entrees should be delivered to the

Parenting is topic of next Coffee Break seminar
The next PTA Coffee Break will be titled “Keeping Your Cool When
Your Kids are Losing Theirs: Parenting without Power Struggles,”
presented by the Laguna Beach PTA Parent Education from 8:15 to 10
a.m. Wednesday at Surf and Sand Hotel, 1555 S. Coast Highway.
Mary Sheedy Kurcinka, a nationally recognized parenting educator
and author, will be the keynote speaker. The program is the second in
a series of workshops on refining parenting skills and developing
better relationships with children.
Kurcinka will explore different temperament types in children and
the common reasons behind parent-child power struggles. Information:

National Merit commendations for area students
Seven students have been named Commended Students in the 2006
National Merit Scholarship Program at Laguna Beach High School, said
Principal Nancy Blade.
They are: Jessica Heitel, Amanda Kerrigan, Robert Knapp, Ashley
Mezzasalma, Alexander Olson, Anne Olson and Brianna Samia Riggio.
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation were
recognized for exceptional academic promise.
Although they will not continue in the 2006 competition for Merit
Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 5% of
more than one million students who entered the 2006 competition by
taking the 2004 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying
Test.
Library holds ‘Unbirthday’ party
The Laguna Beach Library, 363 Glenneyre St., is inviting all local
children ages six to eight to an Unbirthday Party from 3:45 to 4:45
p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27.
The library will host a book club based on Jack Prelutsky’s book,
“It’s Raining Pigs and Noodles.” The Unbirthday Party will be
complete with party games and book discussion. Mock walrus pie and
onion ice cream will be served. Copies of the book are available at

Boo Blast Halloween event set for Oct. 28
The Boo Blast will take place from 2:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct.
28, at El Morro School, 8681 N. Coast Highway. The event features
rides, games and raffle prizes, plus dinner with La Sirena and Z
Pizza.
This year’s Boo Blast will feature the Clawdust Festival, haunted
house experience.
Parking will be provided at the Los Trancos parking lot, and the
Boo Blast shuttle will run continuously throughout the event. Parking
