BURROUGHS VS. VALENCIA

* WHEN: 7 p.m. Friday.

* WHERE: Memorial Field.

* RECORDS: The Indians are 3-2; the Vikings are 4-1.

* LAST WEEK: Burroughs defeated Crescenta Valley, 25-0; Valencia

lost to Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, 35-28.

* THE OUTLOOK: Burroughs opens Foothill League play against not

only arguably the best team in league, but one of the top programs in

CIF Southern Section Division II. The Vikings -- No. 3 in Division II

-- are the defending league champions, and their only loss of the

season came last week against a very good Notre Dame -- No. 1 in

Division III -- team. Valencia has an accomplished offensive weapon

in senior quarterback Michael Herrick, one of the top signal-callers

in the state. Herrick has completed 85 of 140 passes for 1,588 yards

and nine touchdowns.

* SOMETHING INTERESTING: The Burroughs defense, which should have

its hands full with Valencia, is led by senior linebacker Josh

Balderas who has 48 tackles.

BURBANK VS. CANYON

* WHEN: 7 p.m. Friday.

* WHERE: Canyon High.

* RECORDS: The Bulldogs are 3-2; the Cowboys are 4-1.

* LAST WEEK: Burbank defeated Glendale, 30-27; Canyon defeated

Crespi, 20-0.

* THE OUTLOOK: Burbank starts its final season in the Foothill

League against a Canyon team that has slipped up just once this

season. The Cowboys’ only loss came Sept. 23 in a 34-27 nonleague

defeat against Simi Valley. Their offense boasts a solid running back

in junior J. J. Diluigi, who has rushed 95 times for 642 yards and

has 15 touchdowns. The Canyon defense has been stingy this season,

allowing opponents just 12.2 points a game.

* SOMETHING INTERESTING: Bulldog junior running back Marcus Hood

has gained 671 yards in 90 carries and has eight touchdowns.

BELL-JEFF VS.

CANTWELL SACRED HEART

* WHEN: 7 p.m. Friday.

* WHERE: Cantwell Sacred Heart.

* RECORDS: The Guards are 0-4; the Cardinals are 2-4.

* LAST WEEK: Bell-Jeff lost to Kern Valley, 28-14; Cantwell

defeated Lucerne Valley, 21-10.

* THE OUTLOOK: The Guards open defense of their 2004 Santa Fe

League championship against the Cardinals. Cantwell is led by junior

running back Michael Medina, who has 168 carries for 951 yards and 10

touchdowns. Bell-Jeff is still waiting for its offense to start

clicking, as it averages just 11.5 points a game.

* SOMETHING INTERESTING: Coming into this week, the five Santa Fe

League teams have a combined 5-19 record
