A French son

Get a dose of culture from the Continent at a special screening of

“The Son” (“Le Fils”), directed by French brothers Jean-Pierre and

Luc Dardenne, at 7 p.m. Thursday at UC Irvine’s Humanities

Instructional Building, room 100.

The 2002 film will be introduced by Julien Weber, a doctoral

candidate in the university’s French and Italian department. For

those who don’t speak French, the film is shown with English

subtitles.

Admission is $5, with discounts for students and seniors. For

Was it 50 years ago?

The Newport Harbor High School class of 1955 is holding its

50-year reunion this weekend. It begins Friday night with a football

game and continues with a social event on Balboa Island. On Saturday

morning, graduates can cruise the Newport Harbor and then dine and

dance at an event at Newport Harbor Yacht Club, 720 W. Bay Ave,

starting at 5 p.m. On Sunday, there is a brunch.

Walking for Leilani

Three years after 7-year-old Leilani Gutierrez was paralyzed in a

car accident, the community continues to rally behind her as she

works toward recovery. On Sunday at Fairview Park, her family holds

the fourth annual Walk for Leilani, with live music, a barbecue-style

picnic and games. The event is sponsored by the Costa Mesa police and

fire departments, Jo Hendriks Art Studio and others.

Walkers, who will stroll around a trail in the park, pay a $20

registration fee and may collect donations from sponsors. The event

lasts from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Fairview Park, 2525 Placentia Ave.,
