The UC Irvine men’s soccer team defeated Cal State Fullerton, 4-0,
Saturday night in Big West Conference action at Titan Stadium.
UCI junior Anthony Hamilton scored his fifth goal of the season in
the 12th minute. Junior Brad Evans gave a quick pass to junior Doug
Franco, who found Hamilton in stride for the goal.
Craig Ettinger gave UCI (6-3-2, 3-0 in the Big West) a 2-0 lead at
the 36:07 mark as he knocked it in after Franco’s shot rebounded off
the keeper.
In the 44th minute, UCI’s Rudy Mondragon dribbled around the right
side of the box and took a shot that was blocked by the keeper but
put back in by Kit Vitagliano.
Evans went one-on-one with Fullerton keeper Matt Cowan in the 55th
minute. Cowan blocked his first shot before Evans put the rebound
into the net for a 4-0 Anteater lead.
UCI senior keeper Ryan Mathy had one save on the night in earning
his fifth shutout of the season. Cowan had eight saves.
Eagles victorious
* VOLLEYBALL: The Estancia High girls volleyball team defeated
Saddleback, 25-8, 25-19, 23-25, 25-7, in a Golden West League match
Friday night at Estancia High. Taylor Brown led the way with 11
kills. Jaye Hellmich had six aces and three solo blocks and Stacie
Watson added 30 assists for Estancia, which hosts Santa Ana
Wednesday.
UCI challenge today
* TENNIS: The UC Irvine men’s tennis team will host the final day
of the UCI/Pre-Regional Challenge at the Anteater Tennis Stadium
today beginning at 9 a.m. The Anteaters will play singles and doubles
matches against Loyola Marymount. Arizona State will face Cal Poly in
singles and doubles matches as well.
Sea Kings drop two
* WATER POLO: Tom Money scored four goals in each game for Corona
del Mar High’s boys water polo team Saturday, but the Sea Kings lost
to Coronado, 14-9, and Miramonte, 9-6, in consolation play of the S&R;
Sport tournament at Irvine. CdM fell to 6-10.
Rojas wins for Lions
* CROSS COUNTRY: Point Loma Nazarene, ranked No. 10 in the NAIA,
earned the women’s team championship of the Vanguard invitational
Saturday at Fairview Park as the Sea Lions placed three runners in
the top 10 for a total of 46 points, taking first place among seven
teams.
Vanguard, ranked 12th, finished second among universities
participating, but came in third overall behind the club team “Run
With Us,” who also placed three runners in the top 10.
Vanguard’s Grace Jepngetich (18:35) finished second. Freshman
Rebecca Sopp (19:11) was Vanguard’s only other runner to place in the
top 10. Christol McDonald and Laura Bowman finished together with a
time of 19:53, tied for 18th place among a field of 72 runners, and
Kaylynn Gallo completed Vanguard’s scoring with a 26th-place finish
and a 20:08 time. Olivia Amstad (20:13), Sara Ann Medlen (22:48) and
Jen Lesher (23:26) also contributed for VU.
The Vanguard men posted the top two times at the invitational, but
Westmont won the team title.
Vanguard’s Humberto Rojas led from start to finish to take the
men’s individual title and Matt Meyer produced a strong late effort
that moved him into second place just 10 seconds behind Rojas.
Rojas earned the individual championship with a time of 26:15 and
Meyer was clocked at 26:25.
Travis Hartanov (eighth in 26:44) was Vanguard’s third runner in
top 10. Alex Castro (28:32) and Jason Thomas (28:39) were Vanguard’s
final two scoring runners.
