Breakers top Eagles
The Laguna Beach High boys’ water polo team is streaking.
The Breakers made it win No. 5 in a row Tuesday by holding off
host Santa Margarita, 10-9, in a nonleague match at Saddleback
College.
Laguna led by as many as four goals in the match, but the Eagles
fought back late in the match to tie the score.
The teams were tied, 2-2, after one quarter, but Laguna took a 7-3
lead at the half.
Santa Margarita tied the score at 9-9 in the fourth quarter, but
sophomore Nathan McConnell scored the game-winning goal late in the
quarter.
Four days earlier, Laguna had defeated the Eagles, 11-8, at the
Villa Park Tournament.
“We’ve had some pretty good success against Santa Margarita, and
they came out fired up for us Tuesday,” Laguna coach Rick McKee said.
“They fought hard late in the game to tie it up, but Nathan came up
with a big shot to win it.”
Mike Dick led Laguna in scoring with six goals.
The Breakers opened play in the Villa Park Tournament on Sept. 29
and suffered a 12-5 loss to Saddleback in first-round action at Aliso
Niguel High.
Laguna, however, rallied to win its next four tournament games,
defeating Fountain Valley (10-8) and Santa Margarita (11-8) at Aliso
Niguel, and Capistrano Valley (13-5) and Edison (9-8) at El Dorado
High.
By posting a 4-1 record, Laguna captured 17th place in the 32-team
tournament.
The five-game streak improves Laguna’s overall record to 11-5.
Girls’ volleyball
Laguna took care of host Beckman Tuesday night, 25-18, 25-9,
25-14, in Pacific Coast League action.
Sophomore Dana Hutchinson had 10 kills to go along with 10 service
aces, senior Stephanie Darnall had eight kills and junior Mychaela
Miller had eight digs and 17 set assists as Laguna ran its league
mark to 2-1.
The win allowed the Breakers to bounce back from a 23-25, 25-17,
23-25, 15-25 loss to host Corona del Mar in an early battle for the
league lead.
Darnall led the Breakers with 17 kills, 16 digs and six aces.
Hutchinson finished with 16 kills and seven digs and Miller had 33
set assists.
Girls’ tennis
Laguna, playing without top singles player Claire Reitsch, dropped
an 11-7 match to host Corona del Mar.
Junior twins and doubles partners Hayley and Miranda Young won 18
of 19 games to help get the Sea Kings past the Breakers.
CdM won seven of nine doubles sets to top the Breakers.
Reitsch was on a recruiting visit to Southern Methodist
University.
The loss dropped Laguna to 2-1 in the league standings, one game
behind the Sea Kings.
It was Laguna’s first loss of the season.
Cross-country
Laguna’s Pacific Coast League meet against Corona del Mar and
Calvary Chapel on Sept. 29 was postponed and rescheduled for
Wednesday. The Breakers took on league rivals Northwood and
University Thursday, too late for the results to be included in this
edition.
