Fire postpones Burroughs game
The Burroughs High football team will likely have to wait 24 hours to
play its nonleague game against host Chaminade.
The game in West Hills was scheduled to be played at 7 p.m.
Friday. However, the game was postponed because of the Topanga fire
that raged just a few miles from the school.
Indian Coach Keith Knoop said the teams will try to make up the
game at 7 p.m. today at Chaminade. However, the coach also said a
change in the fire conditions could prompt another postponement.
“I’m looking at the smog levels [Friday] because of the fires, and
it would be very difficult to play a game when the levels are so
high,” said Jay Gudzin, Burroughs assistant principal of athletics
and activities. “I have even had three or four schools call be to see
if they could use Memorial Field for games.
“As of [Friday], we are going to try and play the game at
Chaminade [today]. But you never know what can happen with a fire. If
the air quality is still bad, I don’t think we will be able to play.
“If you ask me, I think it’s about a 70% chance that we won’t
play.”
It isn’t the first time in recent years Burroughs has had a game
postponed by fire, as the Indians had a Foothill League contest
against host Hart moved to a Monday two years ago because of fires in
the Santa Clarita area.
If today’s game is played, Burroughs comes in with a 2-1 record,
having lost to St. Francis, 13-10, a week ago. The Eagles are also
2-1 and are coming off a 23-7 win aganst Calabasas.
