Edison, Mater Dei to fight again

A rivalry between two of Orange County’s most successful prep

football programs continues Friday when Edison takes on Mater Dei in

nonleague play.

The Chargers will face the host Monarchs in a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at

Cal State Fullerton.

Edison comes into the matchup on a three-game winning streak.

Mater Dei, meanwhile, collected its first victory of the season

Friday against Foothill.

“Don’t let their record fool you,” Edison coach Dave White said of

the Monarchs, who blitzed Foothill, 33-0, last week. “Their two

losses are to Mission [Viejo] and Orange Lutheran, two of the best

teams in the county.”

The Chargers (3-1) have been working on all cylinders offensively

during their three-game winning streak. They have averaged 37 points

per game in one-sided victories over San Clemente, Capistrano Valley

and Servite.

Edison’s defense turned in its strongest performance of the season

last Friday during a 27-7 win over Servite.

“When you have a quarterback who can throw, talented receivers and

running backs and a strong, returning offensive line, you have a

pretty good set of offensive players,” White said. “Our defense has

been coming along and played a great game against Servite.”

During the three-game streak, Edison quarterback Brian Shrock has

thrown for 768 yards and nine touchdowns with three interceptions.

The Monarchs have won the last three games in a series that was

renewed in 2000 after an 11-year hiatus. The schools first met in

1976.

Last year’s score: Monarchs 20, Chargers 14

Huntington Beach (2-1) vs. Century (1-2)

(at Santa Ana Bowl, 7 p.m.)

Huntington Beach showed its resilience and put on an impressive

rushing display last week in winning its second consecutive game. The

Oilers came back from a 10-0 deficit against host Laguna Hills and

held on for a 19-17 nonleague victory.

Stephen Gabbard led Huntington’s rushing attack with 193 yards and

a pair of touchdowns.

Century was a first-time winner last week when its defense came up

big in a 7-0 shutout of visiting Ocean View.

The Centurions’ defense has given up just 13 points in three

games. But their offense has been nonexistent, scoring just 13

points.

Last year’s score: Oilers 52, Centurions 14

FRIDAY

Santa Ana (1-2) vs. Ocean View (0-2-1)

(at Ocean View High, 7 p.m.)

Ocean View is still looking for win No. 1 for new head coach Dean

Yoshiyama in the Golden West League opener for both teams.

The Seahawks found little offense in last week’s 7-0 loss to

Century, a game in which they could not convert three drives that

went into Century territory.

Santa Ana racked up its first victory of the season last week, and

in a big way -- the Saints blitzed visiting Bolsa Grande, 63-8, with

running back Jason McCalope rushing for four touchdowns. Santa Ana

had scored just six points in its two previous games.

Last year’s score: Saints 35, Seahawks 7.

NOTE: Marina has a bye week after losing to Mission Viejo, 56-0.
