Oilers water polo defeats Tesoro

The Huntington Beach High boys’ water polo team came up with a big

rally Monday and pulled out a 12-11 overtime victory over host Tesoro

in nonleague play.

The Oilers trailed throughout the match and were down by two at

the half, but they rallied in the second of two overtime periods.

They outscored the Titans, 3-0, in the second overtime.

“This was a great win for us,” Huntington coach Eugene Char said.

“We were down 5-3 at the half and shut them out in the second

overtime. The boys did a great job and goaltender Dylan Agajanian had

a great game.”

Agajanian finished with 18 saves.

Mackenzie Hansler scored six goals to lead the Oilers.

Huntington was a 10-6 winner over Santa Margarita in a match in

which Andrew Kreitz led the Oilers with four goals.

The Oilers suffered a pair of one-goal defeats in the previous

week, falling 8-7 to Saddleback and 12-11 to La Habra.

Against Saddleback, Hansler, Addison Miller and Josh De La Torre

each scored two goals, and Reece Engel scored one.

Kreitz topped the Oilers with six goals in the loss to La Habra.

Huntington opens play today against La Canada, the top-rated team

in CIF-Southern Section Division III, in the first round of the Villa

Park Tournament.

In girls’ tennis, Huntington Beach wrapped up the nonleague

portion of its schedule Monday by defeating Garden Grove, 11-7.

The Oilers (4-2) played the match without the services of their

No. 1 singles player, Stacy Kaufman. Sophomore Jennifer Heumann

didn’t miss a beat at No. 1 singles, however, as she earned a sweep

of her Argonaut opponents by scores of 6-2, 6-0, 6-0.

Sophomore Monica Stupaczuk, playing at No. 3 singles, also earned

a sweep for the Oilers with scores of 6-4, 6-1, 6-0. Junior Christina

Le and sophomore Diana Le swept at No. 1 doubles for Huntington,

winning 6-1, 6-1, 6-0.

Edison picked up a nonleague win at the expense of Villa Park,

10-8.

Vi Truong and Lauren Okine swept at No. 1 doubles (6-2, 6-4, 6-1)

to run their season record to 21-0.

The Chargers also picked up six of nine singles sets, with

Brittany Bass, Shannah Henderson and Melissa Boyer each beating the

Nos. 2 and 3 singles players for Villa Park.

Edison won four of six matches in doubles action. The No. 3 team

of juniors Lindy Shields and Monica Olson posted a 6-3 win over the

Spartans’ No. 2 team.

“Lindy and Monica stepped up big time, especially after losing

their first match 0-6,” Edison coach Nick Friendt said.

“As a team, we’re competing very well right now and playing hard,

and, obviously, I feel very confident with our biggest weapon of Vi

[Truong]and Lauren [Okine] serving out a match and clinching a win.”

Edison also fell to Long Beach Wilson, a CIF Division III

semifinalist last year, 10-8.

Truong and Okine swept at No. 1 doubles (6-4, 6-1, 6-0), and the Chargers’ No. 2 team of Henderson and Carly Spreeman won two of three

(1-6, 6-1, 6-1).

“We had a couple of opportunities to win the match, but we didn’t

capitalize on the big points,” Friendt said.
