Sage Hill to strike again?
The constant storm that has surrounded the Sage Hill School football
team this season is likely to show no signs of clearing come
Saturday.
The Lightning visit winless Viewpoint (0-3) at 7 p.m. at Calabasas
High.
“Offensively, we’re not going to change much,” Sage Coach Tom
Monarch said. “We’ll continue working on balancing our passing with
running.”
Sage has dispatched its first four opponents with relative ease,
and Saturday’s nonleague contest could very well follow the same
story line.
Viewpoint has lost its three games by a combined, 93-26, including
a 57-6 trouncing by Chadwick, unranked in CIF Southern Section XIII.
The Lightning (4-0), ranked No. 10 in CIF Division XIII, have used
the last few games to prepare for upcoming Academy League contests,
the most heated of which could come Nov. 4 against St. Margaret’s,
ranked No. 6 in the same division.
Monarch said he has been trying to balance out the team’s passing
and running to prepare for those games, but with lopsided victories,
like the 52-8 shellacking of Sherman Indian last week, it’s been
tough avoiding the run.
Sage jumped out to a 52-0 first-half lead on the Braves before
using an abundance of reserve players in the second half.
The first half of Friday’s game was more balanced than other
games, however, as sophomore quarterback Jamie McGee threw for two
touchdowns and junior fullback Don Ayres rushed for three TDs.
“I was very pleased with the last game,” Monarch said. “We’re
going to have a similar game plan against Viewpoint.”
Quarterback Ryan Tellez has thrown a pair of touchdowns and
running back Michael Bianco has rushed for a score, accounting for
all of Viewpoint’s offensive TDs this season.
The Lightning, on the other hand, have scored 24 touchdowns on
offense, fueled by the ground attack duo of Ayres and senior tailback
Keya Manshadi.
Ayres has gained 481 yards on the ground this season while
Manshadi has rushed for 414 yards.
Defensively against Viewpoint, Monarch said the squad will move
from a four-four defense to more of a four-three to help
counterattack the opposers’ passing game.
