Heritage run set for Saturday
Newport Harbor High is hosting the 19th annual Harbor Heritage Run on
Saturday.
This is a community event to raise funds for Newport Harbor High.
Last year there were about 1,000 runners and this year the event is
expected to have even more participants.
“Just about every team from Harbor runs in it and most of the
coaches run, too,” executive committee member Katie Anderson said.
“The girls tennis team always dresses up in goofy outfits and you get
all these kids that mess around and have fun but are also really
great athletes.”
The event features a 2K and a 5K for all ages, along with Kids’
Klassic Races for ages 5-7 and 8-10. There will also be a fitness
fair, which will be held at the Newport Harbor High School Stadium.
The fitness fair will include various fitness clubs, chiropractors
and different kinds of health foods.
The fitness fair runs from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. Runners can start
warming up at 7:30 a.m. The 2K starts at 8 a.m. and the 5K starts at
8:30 a.m. The Kids’ Klassic Races start at 9:15 a.m. for ages 5-7 and
9:30 a.m. for ages 8-10.
Both the 2K and 5K will begin on 16th St. and will end on the
Sailors’ track. Although the routes will be different for the two
races, both courses will run along 16th St., Dover Drive and Irvine
Avenue for a majority of the races.
There will be multiple divisions, including men’s and women’s ages
30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70-plus. The race will be open for
ages 29 and under. Prizes will be awarded to winners in every
division, and pictures of the winners and their times, along with
many other pictures from the event, will be posted on their website
at www.harborheritagerun.com.
“We’re going to make a bigger deal about the times this year
because they really are important,” Anderson said.
The event includes live entertainment the Harbor cheerleading
squad, who will be there to encourage runners while they’re warming
up and running. Also performing will be the modern dance team and the
marching band from Harbor.
