CORONA DEL MAR ZONE PLAN
Last year, the district began considering a plan to redraw the
attendance boundaries for elementary schools in the Corona del Mar
zone. The goal was to increase student enrollment at Eastbluff
Elementary, which remains well under capacity, and also to prevent an
expected overflow at Newport Coast Elementary.
This summer, however, the district checked the residences of
Newport Coast students and found that at least 70 children lived
outside the school’s boundaries. With those students diverted to
their own neighborhood schools, the district did not foresee
overcrowding at Newport Coast and put the rezoning plan on hold.
At tonight’s meeting, Susan Astarita, assistant superintendent of
elementary education, will present a more modest proposal to the
board. The plan recommends adding the new Crystal Cove communities to
Harbor View Elementary instead of to Newport Coast and encouraging
students in other attendance zones to transfer to Eastbluff.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The rezoning plan upset many parents in the Corona del Mar Zone
who did not want their children to attend different schools than
their neighbors, so it seems likely that the board will approve the
plan in its current form.
EMPLOYEES OF THE YEAR
The district will hand out its annual PRIDE (Proudly Recognizing
Individuals Demonstrating Excellence) Awards at the 6 p.m. ceremony.
The recipients for 2004-05 are assessment director Peggy Anatol,
Newport Harbor High athletic secretary Judy Ayres, teachers Tom Barr
and Phil Schinhofen, receptionist Jennifer Edgerly and administrative
assistant for secondary education Norma Crosby.
MEASURE A UPDATE
The district’s $110-million school construction bond continues
even as campaigners across town rally support for the proposed
$282-million Measure F. Tonight, deputy superintendent Paul Reed will
provide an update on the project, while Harbor View Elementary, one
of the first schools to finish repairs, will give a special
presentation.
