Two-minute drill
In addition to former players Mike Freeman (Newport Harbor High) and
Eric Woods (Corona del Mar) serving as honorary captains for Friday’s
Battle of the Bay football game, each school recognized a former
principal.
Tom Jacobson, representing CdM, and Dennis Evans, representing
Newport Harbor, were also given honorary captain status and took part
in the pregame coin toss at midfield.
* Corona del Mar High freshman coach Gary Almquist said his
players “were so nervous before their game, [a 56-14 loss to Newport
Harbor Thursday] that some had their jerseys on backward.”
* Calvary Chapel High Coach Lyle Lansdell, a former assistant at
Corona del Mar, was on hand to scout the Sea Kings Friday.
Corona del Mar plays Calvary Chapel Friday at Newport Harbor High
and, Lansdell said, the contest will provide an opportunity for the
Sea Kings to honor the 1995 team that advanced to the CIF Southern
Section Division V semifinals.
A get-together with players and coaches is being planned before
the game and players will be introduced to the crowd either before
the game or at halftime, Lansdell said.
CdM Coach Dick Freeman said he will show his players a highlight
reel of the 1995 season this week and he hopes to have players from
the ’95 squad drop by practice to offer this year’s players some
words of advice and inspiration.
* The Battle of the Bay game program coordinated by CdM boosters
included an eight-page insert with photos and information on both
teams, as well as the rivalry.
The insert, with numerous photos provided by Kiefer Fairbanks and
Lou Truxton, was extremely well done and added yet another element to
the game’s special atmosphere, which included an estimated crowd of
7,400 at Orange Coast College.
* Leading, 31-7, over visiting Costa Mesa High with fewer than
eight minutes remaining Friday, Laguna Beach appeared to have no
intention of running down the clock.
The Breakers threw three straight passes, one for 22 yards, one
for 6 yards and one incompletion, before quarterback Charley Bowman
was tackled at the line of scrimmage.
Laguna, which eventually won, 31-9, punted, handing the ball back
to Mesa, having drained less than a minute from the clock.
* Costa Mesa, which prior to Friday’s game had won 14 of the last
15 meetings between the two schools, lost for just the seventh time
in 25 meetings with the Breakers.
* Sage Hill School recorded two first-quarter safeties in its 52-8
nonleague win over visiting Sherman Indian Friday to give it three
safeties for the season.
* Sage Hill senior Nick Sohl will be playing on the offensive line
and in the backfield. Consequently, he changed his jersey number from
22 to 61.
