Brad Evans, Matt Murphy and Anthony Hamilton scored second-half goals
sparking UC Irvine to a 3-0 win over Air Force in nonconference men’s
soccer action Sunday at Anteater Stadium.
Evans scored 37 seconds into the second half as he netted from the
left side of the box on an assist from Murphy. Murphy scored less
than three minutes later on a breakaway with an assist credited to
Charles McKay. Hamilton closed out the scoring with an assist from
Evans in the 74th minute as UCI improved to 3-3-2 on the season.
Ryan Mathy had two saves for the Anteaters as he recorded his
second shutout of the weekend, the fourth this season and the 11th in
his career.
Brian Guyette had four saves for the Falcons, who fell to 2-5-1 on
the year. UCI outshot Air Force, 15-3, and had seven corner kicks to
the Falcons’ one.
The Anteaters open Big West Conference play hosting UC Riverside
Saturday night at 7.
UCI women prevail
The UC Irvine women’s soccer team defeated UNLV, 2-0, Sunday
afternoon in nonconference action at Anteater Stadium.
Freshman Lauren Curtis scored the eventual game-winning goal in
the 30th minute. Curtis scored following a cross by senior Lauren
Baer to freshman Megan Ortiz, who passed the ball on to Curtis for
the goal. Ortiz scored her fourth goal of the season with less than a
minute to play to seal the victory for UCI (2-7-1).
Freshman goalkeeper Rosie Aguilera earned her second shutout of
the season and she had three saves on the day.
