CdM triumphs

Jack Turner raced to a 16:39 to lead the Corona del Mar boys cross

country team to a first-place finish at the prestigious Stanford

invitational Saturday with 106 points, ahead of runner-up and

Northern California power St. Francis (121).

Tommy Hutchison (16:54), Timmy Scott (17:02), Ryan Guthrie (17:04)

and Brian Licorish (17:09) also scored for the Sea Kings, while Tri

Nguyen (17:55) and Paris Salgado (18:50) contributed.

Sailor girls victorious

* CROSS COUNTRY: Newport Harbor’s girls cross country team

captured the 25-team Fall Classic invitational, hosted by Orange

Lutheran and Valencia at Central Park in Huntington Beach on

Saturday, behind individual champion Whitney Blue (17:06), the

Sailors’ lone senior.

Juniors Lauren Maddox (18:40), Taylor Bryson (18:43) and Melissa

Mead (18:45) and freshman Desiree Alexander (20:13) also scored for

Coach Eric Tweit’s Sailors.

Lions win in OT

* SOCCER: Rene’ Rodriquez scored the winning goal on a bicycle

kick 90 seconds into the second overtime period as the Vanguard men’s

soccer team defeated Grand Canyon, 2-1.

Kunert nets 18

* WATER POLO: The Estancia High boys water polo team received a

total of 18 goals in two games from Chad Kunert in the Irvine

tournament. Kunert scored seven goals, including the game-winner in

overtime, in Estancia’s 14-13 victory over Beckman. Kunert added 11

more goals in Estancia’s 16-11 win over La Quinta. Kunert’s 11 goals

set a school record for goals in a game. Trevor McDonald scored five

goals on the day for Estancia (4-2).

OCC tops Southwestern

* VOLLEYBALL: Orange Coast College’s women’s volleyball team

defeated Southwestern College, 30-11, 30-12, 30-15. Brittney Ray of

OCC (5-0) had nine kills in the nonconference win.

Sea Kings finish second

* CROSS COUNTRY: The Corona del Mar High girls cross country team

took second with 83 points at the Stanford invitational. The Sea

Kings were edged by Buchanon (82) by one point. Torrey Pines was

third with 151 points.

Leading the way for the Sea Kings was senior Annie St. Geme, who

had a time of 17:59 -- good for third place. Sarah Cummings finished

fifth in 18:21 and Shelby Buckley took 12th in 18:53. Rounding out

the Sea King seven was Allison Damon (19:01), Nichole Slykhous

(20:06), Christie St. Geme (20:35) and Alison Gushue (21:43).

UCI 6th at Stanford

* CROSS COUNTRY: The UC Irvine women’s cross country team turned

in a strong performance at the Stanford invitational, finishing sixth

out of 32 teams.

UCI’s Laura Olvera was 19th in 22:23, followed by Marie Nguyen

(22:33) and Candice Proctor (22:48). The UCI men’s squad finished

12th, led by Nick Mosey (25:08), Sky Johnston (25:42), Rusty Whisman

(25:48) and Adrian Doty (25:53).

Eagle boys place 8th

* CROSS COUNTRY: Estancia’s boys, led by senior Ernesto Castaneda,

finished eighth at the Fall Classic invitational Saturday at Central

Park.

Castaneda placed 16th in 15:47. C.J. Buchman (15:58), Hector Gomez

(16:10), Fernando Orozco (16:31) and Enrique Vivar (17:27) gathered

the remaining points for the Eagles.

Sydney Barloon (19:32) paced the Estancia girls to a 16th-place

finish. Paula Negrette (19:48), Cindy Ramirez (21:21), Magali Onofre

(21:40) and Katrina Rios (22:47) rounded out the scoring for the

Eagles.

Eagles land victory

* VOLLEYBALL: The Estancia High girls volleyball team defeated

Orange, 25-4, 25-9, 25-16, Friday night in a Golden West League

match. Jaye Hellmich led the way with 10 kills and five aces. Sarah

Braunsdorf added five kills and 16 aces (a school record for aces in

a single match). Stacie Watson added 21 assists and six digs for

Estancia (8-3, 2-0).

UCI sunk in Malibu

* WATER POLO: Sixth-ranked Pepperdine defeated No. 7 UC Irvine,

7-5, in nonconference men’s water polo in Malibu Saturday. Dreason

Barry and Tim Hutten netted two goals apiece for the Anteaters (5-5).

Lightning claim third

* VOLLEYBALL: Sage Hill’s girls volleyball team won five of six

matches Saturday at University tournament. Kelsey Lawler was named to

all-tournament for Sage (10-8).

Newport boys 16th

* CROSS COUNTRY: The Newport Harbor High boys cross country team

finished 16th at the Fall Classic invitational Saturday at Central

Park.

Senior Kenny Rakestraw led the Sailors, placing 10th in 15:36.

Sophomore Alex Shaw (17:13), freshman Scott Figueroa (17:15), senior

Hunter Wiley (17:25) and junior Francisco Avonce (17:34) rounded out

the top five runners for the Sailors.

Sea Kings drop two

* WATER POLO: Corona del Mar High’s boys water polo team dropped

two matches Saturday in the South Coast tournament. CdM fell, 14-9,

to Bishop’s of La Jolla in the quarterfinals. In the seventh-place

game, the Sea Kings (3-5) lost, 10-4, to Los Alamitos.

Finals matchup set

* PRO TENNIS: Alex Reichel’s winning streak ended with a 6-4, 6-4

loss to No. 1 seed Wayne Odesnik of Florida at the 2005 Costa Mesa

Classic Saturday.

Sam Warburg, a former Stanford team member, defeated Southern

California junior standout Lester Cook, 6-3, 5-1, retire. Cook pulled

a groin. Warburg takes on Odesnik in the finals today.

Anteaters sweep Davis

* VOLLEYBALL: The UC Irvine women’s volleyball team defeated UC

Davis, 30-20, 30-17, 30-18, Saturday at Crawford Court. Amanda

Vazquez led the way with 18 kills.

Lions shut down

* SOCCER: One goal proved to be enough to break the Vanguard

women’s soccer team’s five-game winning streak, as the Lions fell,

1-0, to Grand Canyon.
