Newport Harbor makes way to semifinals

The Newport Harbor High boys water polo team, ranked No. 1 in CIF
Southern Section’s Division I, edged Riverside Poly, ranked No. 1 in
CIF’s Division V, 6-5, Friday night at Newport Harbor High in the
third round of the South Coast tournament.
Brett Auer led the way with two goals. Clay Jorth had a goal and
two assists and Clint Jorth tallied two assists and two steals.
Telford Cottam added a goal and two steals and goalkeeper Bryce
McLain made nine saves for Newport Harbor, which improved to 5-0 this
season. The Sailors play in the semifinals today at 10:40 a.m. The
finals are slated for 4:05 p.m. at Newport Harbor High.

Semis slated today
* TENNIS: Fullerton resident Alex Reichel defeated Angelo
Niculescu of Romania, 6-1, 6-3, Friday to advance to today’s
semifinals of the Costa Mesa Pro Classic tennis tournament at the
Costa Mesa Tennis Center.
Reichel will face No. 1 seed Wayne Odesnik of Florida in the
second semifinal of the day. Lester Cook and Sam Warbug, both of the
United States, will play at 10 a.m. in the first semifinal.
Odesnik defeated Australia’s Daniel Wendler, 6-2, 6-2, Friday to
advance, while Cook defeated Scott Lipsky, 6-3, 7-5, and Warbug
topped Matthew Behrmann, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 -- both in the quarters
Friday.
In Thursday’s action, a hard fought match between Newport Beach
resident and USC team member Kas Van’t Hof and Hamid Mirzadeh
resulted in a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 victory for Mirzadeh.
Van’t Hof received a wild card since he won the men’s national
open in San Diego. Carsten Ball, also a Newport Beach resident,
received a doubles entry wild card.
Ball and partner Tim Smyczek lost in the first round of the
doubles main draw to Vladimir Obradovic and Greg Ouellette, 7-6, 7-5.
The 2005 Costa Mesa Pro Classic features 32 singles players and a
16-team doubles field. Admission to the tournament is free.
Mesa sweeps Lions
* VOLLEYBALL: The host Costa Mesa High girls volleyball team swept
Westminster, 25-7, 25-23, 25-17, in a Golden West League match on
Thursday.
Tracy Bjelland led the way on offense for Costa Mesa (4-7, 1-1 in
league) with five kills and three service aces, but also contributed
on defense as well with six digs. Setter Kim Jackson had 16 assists
and Dana Cabico helped out with six service aces.
The Mustangs will play again today in the Loara tournament.
‘Eaters down Davis
* SOCCER: The UC Irvine boys soccer team defeated UC Davis, 1-0,
Friday at UCI. Doug Franco scored for the Anteaters, who outshot UC
Davis 10-4. UCI moves to 2-3-2 this season.
Sage Hill sweeps
* TENNIS: The Sage Hill School girls tennis team trounced Brethren
Christian, 18-0, Friday in an Academy League match. It marked the
team’s second straight shutout.
Sarah Geocaris swept her sets without losing a game. Stephanie
Langer and Ashley Adams also swept in singles while only dropping
five games between them. The doubles team of Grace Graham and Erica
Spivack swept while dropping just one game. Sage Hill moved to 6-2
overall and 2-0 in league.
Pirates swing to win
* VOLLEYBALL: The Orange Coast College women’s volleyball team
defeated San Diego City, 30-19, 30-19, 30-8, Friday at San Diego City
College. Kiwi Winkler led the way with 12 kills. Joanna Johnson
tallied 10 kills and Caitlin Parker added 27 aces for OCC, which
moved to 4-0.
Sea Kings defeated
* WATER POLO: The Corona del Mar High boys water polo team, ranked
No. 4 in CIF Southern Section’s Division I, lost to La Canada, ranked
No. 1 in CIF’s Division III, 8-6, Friday in the third round of the
South Coast Tournament. Jacob Murphy led the way with three goals and
Tom Money added five steals.
The loss comes on the heels of Thursday’s triumphant 5-4 victory
in the second round against rival Foothill. Money netted three goals
in the victory.

Anteaters edged
* SOCCER: The University of San Diego women’s soccer team topped
UC Irvine, 2-1, in a nonconference game at Anteaters Stadium Friday.
UCI’s Brittany Del Soldato knotted the score at 1-1 with a header off
a Lauren Curtis Cross at 23:26. But San Diego scored the game-winner
in the second half. UCI goalkeeper Erin Henry recorded two saves for
UCI, which dropped to 1-7-1 overall. The Anteaters host UNLV Sunday
at 2 p.m.
Locals washed out
* SURFING: Competition concluded Friday at the Op Newport Classic
surfing championship at the 56th Street jetty with foggy,
unpredictable weather.
But with midmorning clearing, the final heats of the day were able
to play themselves out. Newport Beach residents Dave Gidding and Josh
Hoyer wrapped up competition in the event with defeats Friday.
Gidding finished third in Heat 16 in the round of 96 to finish
129th overall, while Hoyer was third in Heat 10 for 33rd overall.
Men’s quarterfinals are scheduled today beginning at 10 a.m.
Eagles drop pair
* WATER POLO: The Estancia High boys water polo team lost to Long
Beach Millikan, 21-5, and Irvine, 14-3, in the Irvine tournament
Friday. Against Millikan, Chad Kunert led the way with three goals
and goalkeeper Brock McDonald made 10 saves. Estancia fell to 2-2 on
the season.
UCI loses in 3
* VOLLEYBALL: The UC Irvine women’s volleyball team fell to
visiting Saint Mary’s, 31-29, 30-26, 30-27, Friday at Crawford Court.
Lauren Kellerman led the way with 13 kills. Christa Conom tallied 34
assists and Keegan Featherstone added 11 digs for UCI (5-7). Saint
Mary’s improved to 9-2.
CdM wins by forfeit
* GOLF: The Corona del Mar girls golf team won by forfeit when a
Beckman High golfer had health issues on the eighth hole and couldn’t
finish. The teams finished the match anyway -- Beckman with four
players -- and Corona del Mar came out ahead, 212-224.
The Sea Kings’ score was four strokes off the school record.
Courtney Wright and Katie McKitterick both shot 40s to earn
co-medalist honors. Jessica Milner and Michelle Drucker finished with
42s and Jonna Kim shot a 48 for Corona del Mar, which moved to 4-0
overall and 2-0 in the Pacific Coast League.
Sailors remain winless
* GOLF: The Newport Harbor High girls golf team fell to Edison,
222-261, at Miles Square Golf Club Thursday afternoon in a nonleague
match. Kendall Horn led the way with a 45. Ali Grace shot a 52 for
the Sailors, who dropped to 0-4.
Vanguard slips
* SOCCER: Vanguard University’s mens soccer lost Thursday night,
1-0, at Alliant International. The Lions controlled the pace of the
match, but were unable to dent the scoreboard. Vanguard took 10 shots
on goal in the match, and had 14 corner kicks.
The Lions (3-3-1) play Saturday at home against Grand Canyon
University.
CdM falls in four
* VOLLEYBALL: The Corona del Mar High girls volleyball team fell
to host Northwood 25-19, 22-25, 25-13, 25-17, in a Pacific Coast
League game Thursday night. Julianne Piggott led the way with 25 digs
and 11 kills. The Sea Kings fell to 1-6 overall and 1-1 in league.
Jorth makes Team USA
* WATER POLO: USA Water Polo is preparing for the Junior World
Championships to be held near Buenos Aires, Argentina on Oct. 6-15.
The final 13 players (born in 1987 to 1989) and three coaches have
been chosen for the competition, which will be held at the
Pan-American Stadium in Del Mar Plata, Argentina. The opening
ceremony will take place at the Pan American Stadium on Saturday,
Oct. 8.
Clay Jorth, a senior water polo star at Newport Harbor High made
the team and will compete for Team USA. Dan Klatt of Costa Mesa will
be an assistant coach.
UCI expands roster
* BASKETBALL: Marcus McIntosh a junior guard, has transferred from
Texas A&M; to UC Irvine and will be eligible for the 2006-07
basketball season, the school announced.
McIntosh, who will have two seasons of eligibility, is one of a
handful of additions announced by Coach Pat Douglass.
Wolfgang Gieler, a 6-foot-9, 255-pound freshman, joins the
Anteaters from Germany, where he competed for Peter Joerres
Gumnasium, as well as under-18 and under-20 national teams.
Gieler averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds as a senior.
McIntosh, a 6-0, 180-pounder, averaged 2.6 points in 10 games with
Texas A&M; last season as a sophomore. As a freshman, he earned
honorable mention for the National Junior College Athletic
Association’s All-American selections.
That season, he averaged 12.6 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.1 steals
for Northeastern, a Colorado community college. McIntosh shot 57.1%
from the field for Northeastern, where he was an all-region honoree.
McIntosh averaged 20.6 points, four rebounds and four assists as a
senior at Eagle Crest High in Aurora, Colo.
Douglass also announced the addition of three walk-ons.
Dustin Price, a 6-0 guard, played at Irvine Valley College, while
5-9 guard Brandon Sievers comes out of the Saddleback College
program. Chad McDaniel, a 6-0 guard, played previously at Lancaster
High.
UCI opens the season Nov. 10 against George Mason in the 2K Sport
College Classic at Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Anteaters shine
* BASEBALL: Several UC Irvine products have completed successful
minor league baseball seasons.
Matt Anderson was named to the All-Appalacian League team after
batting .314 with five home runs and 30 RBIs for the Kingsport Mets.
Anderson was promoted to the Brooklyn Cyclones of the New York
Penn League on Aug. 14. As a Cyclone, Anderson batted .278 over 23
games and recorded 25 hits, three home runs and 10 RBIs.
Pitcher Steve Schroer helped the Staten Island Yankees win the New
York-Penn League championship with a title series sweep of Auburn.
Schroer pitched a shutout inning in Game 1 of the series and ended
the season 3-3 with a 1.60 ERA.
Schroer’s debut professional season included striking out 39 in 39
1/3 innings. He allowed just seven earned runs on 24 hits. The
right-hander was second on the team with 23 appearances.
Sean Tracey posted a 14-6 pitching record with the Birmingham
Barons, including a 4.07 ERA. His 14 wins tied for the league lead
and he led the team in strikeouts with 106.
The right-hander pitched 163 2/3 innings and gave up 74 earned
runs while tossing a pair of complete games in 28 starts.
Outfielder Chris Klemm batted .214 with the Lakewood BlueClaws.
Klemm recorded 63 hits in 87 games, including 12 doubles, three
triples and three home runs. He drove in 32 runs an also stole two
bases.
Chris Nicoll, the Anteaters’ ace last spring, finished his season
with the Idaho Falls Chukars with an 0-3 record and a 3.62 ERA.
Nicoll struck out 34 in 27 1/3 innings and made seven starts for the
team.
Matt Fisher batted .248 for the Hagerstown Suns with 35 hits in 45
games. Fisher scored 24 runs.
Nash Robertson had a 5.00 ERA with the Golf Coast League Pirates.
He struck out nine and allowed 10 hits in nine innings.
David Kennedy hit .225 for the Hudson Valley Renegades with 48
hits in 55 games. Kennedy led the team in triples with five.
Brett Dalton ended the season with a .229 batting average. Dalton
had 33 hits in 36 games and had six doubles, a triple and 13 RBIs for
the Batavia Muckdogs. The infielder also drew 20 walks and had a
stolen base.
Jordan Szabo hit .254 for Batavia in 37 games. He had eight
doubles, three triples and one home run.
Pitcher Brett Smith was 3-2 with a 4.07 ERA for the Charleston
Riverdogs, striking out 61 in 66 1/3 innings. Smith made 11 starts.
Mark Wagner hit .203 for the Lowell Spinners this season.
Crosson strikes twice
* SOCCER:The Orange Coast College women’s soccer team defeated
visiting Santa Ana, 3-0, Friday in Orange Empire Conference action.
Christine Crosson netted her first two goals of the season for OCC
(2-4-3, 2-1-1). Stacey Shoop added a goal for the Pirates.
