Orange Coast College has a good men’s water polo team.
Unfortunately, Wednesday it met one of the best teams, Golden West
College. The Rustlers have won the Orange Empire Conference
championship the last four years.
The past titles didn’t faze the Pirates. OCC did lose the match,
17-10. However, the Pirates consistently attacked the Rustlers’ net
with varieties of perimeter and inside shots. OCC outshot Golden West
25-21, but the shots didn’t convert into goals.
“We did a good job offensively. When you score ten goals, your
team will usually win.” said Pirate Coach Bahram Hojreh.
The Pirates were led by freshman Nikola Popvic. The attacker
scored seven of the 10 goals for the Pirates. In the third period,
Popvic scored five goals to outscore Golden West, five to four.
OCC (7-5, 0-1) plays their next against UC Santa Cruz in the West
Valley invitational.
