Newport Classic opens today

The Op Newport Classic surfing championship returns to the 56th

Street jetty in Newport Beach today and runs through Saturday. The

Newport Classic is the second stop in the California Trifecta Surf

Series.

The event features top-notch Association of Surfing Professionals

members, both male and female; a city championship that will showcase

local amateur performers of all ages; a surf film festival; female

surf instruction; and a surf-automobile giveaway.

The WQS contests attract some of the best surfers in the world,

which highlights the week of surfing. The ASP-sanctioned event

returns as a WQS-rated men’s (two-star) and women’s (one-star)

contest, one of four events on the West Coast leg of the Surfing

America Pro Tour in North America.

A field of as many as 144 men will compete in the two-star event

for a piece of a $25,000 prize, advancement in the world rankings and

the chance to join next year’s World Championship Tour.

The women’s one-star field will pit about two dozen female pros

against each other, promising top finishers $5,000 in prize money and

coveted WQS points.

Qualifying heats for both pro divisions are scheduled to start

Sept. 23. The finals are slated to take place Sept. 25.

The second part of this year’s Newport Classic is the 17th annual

Newport Beach surf championships, an amateur surfing contest hosted

by the city of Newport Beach in conjunction with Op. The competition

focuses on the sport of surfing in the community and is open to

competitors of diverse ages and abilities.
