‘Dogs capture tourney
BOYS’ WATER POLO
Burbank in Calabasas Tournament: The Bulldogs went 4-0 and
captured the championship of the event Saturday at Calabasas High.
Burbank -- tied for ninth in CIF Southern Section Division III --
came on in the fourth quarter in the title match.
Tied with Alemany at 8 after three quarters, Burbank outscored the
Indians, 3-1, in the final quarter to win, 11-9.
Burbank opened the tournament Thursday with a 17-9 win against Pacifica and followed with a 17-8 victory against Crespi.
In a semifinal match Saturday, the Bulldog defense clamped down
and recorded an 11-0 shutout against Sherman Oaks Notre Dame.
GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
Providence in Brethen Christan Volleyball Bonanza: The Pioneers
captured the tourney title for the second straight year Saturday.
In the championship game, the Pioneers downed host Brethren
Christian, 25-13, to secure the title.
In the semifinals, Providence disposed of Liberty League foe
Viewpoint, 26-24.
The Pioneers also recorded a 25-14 win against Bolsa Grande in the
championship round. In pool play, they defeated Santa Ana Calvary
Chapel, 25-22, 25-6, Linfield Christian, 25-17, 25-20, and St.
Anthony, 25-1, 25-9.
Junior outside hitter Heather Hansen was named the tournament’s
most valuable player for the second straight year. Senior setter
Vanessa Amran and sophomore middle blocker Fio Sotomayor earned
all-tournament honors
Hansen had 22 kills and Amran had 46 assists in the tourney.
CROSS-COUNTRY
Burroughs in Mount Carmel (San Diego) Tournament: The Indians had
some fine performances in the meet Saturday.
The girls ran 2.7 miles and the boys 2.95 miles in grade-level
races.
In the sophomore girls’ race, Sadee Martinez was sixth in 16
minutes 43 minutes and Kerry Hodgins was 59th in 18:49. In the junior
girls’ race, Michelle Martinez was 10th in 16:51 and Lilyana Morejon
was 38th in 18:49.
Brenda Santana was 33rd in 18:40 and she was followed by Audrey
Akcasu (19:18) in the senior girls’ race.
In the freshman boys’ race, Dustin Blankenship was ninth in 17:27
and James Larson was 30th in 16:56 in the boys’ junior race.
Burroughs was led by Adrian Harrison (18th; 16:29), Alex Sandoval
(28th; 16:46), Morgan Walker (30th; 16:47), Vernon Roque (40th;
16:59) and Benji Baker (52nd; 17:16) in the boys’ senior race.
Burbank in Woodbridge Invitational: The Bulldogs enjoyed some team
success Saturday in the prestigious meet in Irvine.
Despite having the fastest team time in the Division III race, and
the third-fastest team time out of all the divisions, a group of
Bulldog sophomores took second in its race by one point.
Ryan Williams was the team leader, taking fifth in 16 minutes 19
seconds. He was followed by Matt Carey (14th; 16:43), Aksel
Kirakosyan (25th; 17:02), Forest Goodbar (47th; 17:27) and Tony Perez
(49th; 17:28).
The Bulldog girls managed to take 14th of 45 schools in the
Division III varsity race. They were led by Michelle Horgan, who
finished in 29th in 19:36. She was followed by Nelly Shamirian (64th;
20:16), Natasha Christoffersen (76th; 20:26), Agnes Kirakosyan
(109th; 21:08) and Kiran Jolly (133rd; 21:40).
YOUTH FOOTBALL
Burbank Vikings: In winning games, the Junior Black defeated Crown
Valley, 32-6, the Junior Green downed Thousand Oaks White, 20-8, the
Junior White defeated Calabasas Silver, 28-14, Senior Black defeated
Castaic, 12-7 and the Senior Green got by Crown Valley, 22-0, in
second-week games Saturday.
