California Amateur champion and Newport Beach resident Don DuBois
edged Southern California Golf Association Amateur champion Scott
McGihon of Bermuda Dunes by 55 points to capture the inaugural SCGA
Player of the Year competition.
The award will be presented at the SCGA annual meeting on Nov. 1
in Universal City.
DuBois, who finished high in seven events, had 875 total points,
while McGihon, in four events, had 820. Recently-crowned SCGA
Mid-Amateur champion John McClure of West Los Angeles finished third
with 730.
The 46-year-old DuBois, a title insurance executive, defeated
17-year-old Joseph Bramlett of Saratoga to win the 94th California
Amateur championship at Pebble Beach last June. DuBois, who was
medalist in the 2002 state amateur, became the 25th player to win
both medalist honors and also the championship.
Earlier this week, DuBois reached match play in the U.S.
Mid-Amateur championship at The Honors Course in Tennessee. The
Player of the Year competition began with the SCGA Four-Ball
championship last November and finished this week.
