Corona del Mar High won its boys water polo season opener, 11-7, over
visiting Harvard Westlake Wednesday afternoon.
Senior Tom Money led the Sea Kings with six goals, while Jacob
Murphy and Kyle Hersh added two goals apiece. Goalkeeper Phillip
DiGiacomo had 12 saves in the victory.
Estancia sweeps
* VOLLEYBALL: The Estancia High girls volleyball team defeated La
Quinta, 25-10, 25-13, 25-23, in a nonleague match Wednesday at
Estancia High. Jaye Hellmich and Taylor Brown led the way with 10
kills each and Sarah Braunsdorf added eight kills and eight digs.
Stacie Watson tallied 28 assists for Estancia, which moves to 3-0
this season.
Sailors under par
* GOLF: The Newport Harbor High girls golf team fell to Esperanza,
241-269, Wednesday at Santa Ana Country Club in a nonleague match.
Tiffany Kim led the way with a 49. Kendall Horn shot a 50 and Ali
Grace finished with a 54 for the Sailors (0-2), who take on Corona
del Mar today at Big Canyon Country Club.
Radeva in a hurry
* TENNIS: The Newport Harbor High girls tennis team defeated
visiting Northwood, 11-7, Wednesday. Freshman Nelly Radeva won her
two singles sets, 6-0, 6-1. She finished both games in less than 10
minutes. The doubles team of Carly Adams and Megan McKay won their
sets 6-2, 6-3, 6-1. Joe Cosserly’s key first-round victory gave
Newport Harbor (3-0) a 5-1 lead going into the second round.
Sage defeats Calvary
* VOLLEYBALL: Senior Haywood Wright slammed a team-high nine kills
and the Sage Hill School girls volleyball team defeated visiting
Calvary Chapel of Murrieta, 25-10, 25-13, 26-24, in nonleague play
Tuesday.
Wright also posted five blocks and four digs for Sage (2-0), while
Berkley bound outside hitter Cat Dailey, a senior, tallied nine kills
and two blocks. Senior Vista Murphy added seven kills.
Pirates swim to win
* WATER POLO: The Orange Coast College men’s water polo team edged
host Cal Baptist University, 7-6, Wednesday in a nonconference game.
Kevin Mesnard led the way with two goals. Brett Hellmich made 11
saves in goal. The Pirates, who moved to 4-1, play two games today at
Ventura College. They open at 12:30 p.m. against Long Beach City and
conclude with a 3:30 p.m. game against Cerritos.
Coast tops Glendale
* VOLLEYBALL: Orange Coast College women’s volleyball team won its
season opener over host Glendale Community College, 30-13, 30-17,
30-14, Tuesday night.
Freshman outside hitter Kiwi Winkler fired 15 kills and five
services aces. Nicole Klawitter led the Pirates with 27 assists. All
11 healthy Pirates played in the match.
CdM’s Ball in event
* TENNIS: Former Corona del Mar standout Carston Ball will compete
in the Racquet Club of Irvine Meyer Pharmaceutical Pro Features
tournament. The 17-year-old Newport Beach resident will face a field
of players from eight different countries. The USTA event will have a
$10,000 purse.
UCI’s Olevara honored
* CROSS COUNTRY: UC Irvine freshman Laura Olvera has been named
Big West Athlete of the Week in women’s cross country.
Olvera finished third in the UCI Invitational last Saturday. Her
time of 18:38.7 in the 5,000 meters was two minutes faster than her
performance last year. Olvera’s performance propelled the Anteaters
to a second-place finish.
‘Eaters claim fifith
* GOLF: The UC Irvine women’s golf team finished fifth at the
Oregon State invitational at the Trysting Tree Golf Course in Oregon.
The Anteaters shot a 314 on the final round to end at 912.
