Edison beats Tritons

It’s still early in the 2005 prep football season, but the Edison

Chargers picked up a key victory last Friday.

Playing before nearly 8,000 people at San Clemente High, Edison

was working on all cylinders in a surprisingly easy 43-20 victory

over the host Tritons.

The Chargers were coming off a 21-13 season-opening loss in Hawaii

to Kamehameha on Sept. 2. They had to regroup to face a strong San

Clemente team that entered the season ranked No. 6 in the Division II

preseason poll.

The flu bug hit the Edison entourage in Hawaii, and the Chargers

were further weakened when starting quarterback Brian Shrock didn’t

play in the opener.

Shrock returned Friday to play at San Clemente, and he made all

the difference. The senior threw five touchdown passes and rushed for

another in the lopsided win.

His five touchdown passes tied a school record held by several

other players.

“Brian had a real big game for us, and it was great to have him

back in our lineup,” Edison coach Dave White said. “This win was real

important for us. We weren’t full stride in Hawaii, but we came back

strong to pick up a big win at San Clemente. It would have been tough

to start out 0-2.”

Next up for Edison is a Friday night home date with Capistrano

Valley at Orange Coast College. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

The Cougars had their offense in high gear in their season opener

last Friday: They ran away with a 44-7 victory over Marina, a Sunset

League foe of Edison’s.

Edison will have to contain a potent Capo Valley rushing attack

led by Rodrigo Muratalla, who rushed for 125 yards against Marina.

“They have a new coach who played at Capo, and they are getting

better every year,” White said of the Cougars. “They have two players

on defense and a three-year starter at tailback who are being

recruited. This is the best team they’ve had in a while.”

Edison has gone 6-0-1 against Capo Valley in the last eight years

to even the all-time series at 8-8-1.

Last year’s score: Chargers 29, Cougars 0

TONIGHT

Costa Mesa (0-1) vs. Huntington Beach (0-1)

(at Huntington Beach High, 7 p.m.)

Huntington Beach is looking for its first win of the season when

it hosts Costa Mesa in its home opener.

The Oilers opened their season Sept. 9 on the road and lost by a

score of 35-28 to Los Amigos despite rushing for nearly 200 yards.

Huey Tran rushed for 122 yards and two touchdowns, and Eric Jaso

had a big game on special teams and as a receiver for the Oilers.

They’ll be meeting a Costa Mesa team that is coming off a

season-opening 37-7 loss to Corona del Mar.

Last year’s score: Oilers 42, Mustangs 28

FRIDAY

Newport Harbor (1-0) vs. Marina (0-2)

(at Westminster High, 7 p.m.)

This is the final nonleague meeting between the two schools, as

Newport Harbor joins Marina in the revamped Sunset League beginning

with the 2006-07 school year.

Newport has had the edge in this rivalry, but Marina has had its

moments against the Sailors, who are favored Friday night.

Newport launched its season on Sept. 8 with a 14-7 win over

Fountain Valley, also a member of the Sunset League.

The Sailors got big plays from their special teams to defeat the

Barons.

They are led offensively by junior running back Jasen Ruiz.

They’ll be looking to go 2-0 against Sunset competition when they

take on Marina, which is 0-2 after last week’s 44-7 loss at

Capistrano Valley. In two games, the Vikings have reached the end

zone just twice.

Friday’s game will be the home opener for Marina, which lost at

Los Osos Sept. 2.

Last year’s score: Sailors 35, Vikings 0

Laguna Beach (2-0) vs. Ocean View (0-1)

(at Ocean View High, 7 p.m.)

Friday marks the first home game for Ocean View and first-year

head coach Dean Yoshiyama.

Turnovers doomed Ocean View in its season-opening loss last Friday

to Santiago, which rallied for a 19-12 victory.

Aaron Valenzuela rushed for a pair of touchdowns and finished with

92 yards on the ground for the Seahawks, who had a 12-0 lead over the

Cavaliers.

Laguna Beach, meanwhile, has won its first two games convincingly.

Despite committing several turnovers in each of the first two

games, the Breakers offense is averaging 37 points.

Ocean View will need to find a way to contain Breakers sophomore

quarterback Chuck Bowman, a transfer from Montana who rushed for two

touchdowns, and running back George Chheng, who also rushed for two

touchdowns, in last Friday’s 34-13 win at Westminster La Quinta.

Last year’s score: Breakers 48, Seahawks 13
