Moms rally for car crash victim
After sustaining serious injuries from a car accident in February,
13-year-old Cade Feitler remains hospitalized.
To show support for the Feitler family, a group of 10 Newport-Mesa
mothers are organizing a dodge ball tournament and fundraiser,
scheduled for Friday evening at the Boys and Girls Club in Costa
Mesa, with all proceeds going toward the Cade Feitler Fund.
The group, Moms 4 Cade, is made up of 10 mothers of children who
went to Ensign Intermediate School with Cade.
“We relate because we have children the same age,” said Lisa
Albert, a member of Moms 4 Cade, who added that Cade’s condition has
left a void in the lives of his friends and that dealing with it has
been hard on them. “It’s one of the first tragic accidents that
happened to these kids.”
Cade, who is in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Children’s
Hospital of Orange County, has spent seven months in hospitals and
rehabilitation centers, with his condition and prognosis constantly
changing. The fund was set up by the Feitler family to help alleviate
the financial burdens of growing medical bills.
“It was very traumatic when it happened, and it’s still
traumatic,” said Susie Call, a member of Moms 4 Cade. “They’re a
really loved family in the community. The focus is on the fact that
people love the family; they love Cade.... There’s a lot of hope that
he will make a really good recovery.”
Marta Moghaddam, another member of Moms 4 Cade, said the group
hopes to raise somewhere between $15,000 and $25,000 at Friday’s
event, which will also include a silent auction of items such as
vacations, sports memorabilia, gift certificates and jewelry.
“We’re just raising money for whatever needs he may have,”
Moghaddam said. “It’s one of the most diverse and community-sponsored
auctions I’ve ever seen.”
Moghaddam said there is no way to estimate what the total cost of
medical care will be, as Cade has had many surgeries and has spent
time in many medical facilities.
Call said organizing the tournament has been a community effort,
with many local parents and small businesses making donations. All
food will be provided by TK Burger.
Moghaddam said they decided to organize a dodge ball tournament
because they want to involve Cade’s friends and schoolmates.
“Everybody wanted to do something, but nobody had the avenue to do
it,” Moghaddam said.
She said there will be a total of 16 teams of six players in the
tournament, which starts at 5 p.m.
“This would be an event Cade would love to play in,” Call said.
Call added that before the accident, Cade was extremely energetic
and athletic, and Call said he played a lot of sports at the Boys and
Girls Club.
“We want to help out in any way possible,” Moghaddam said. “It’s
all about Cade. It’s all for him.”
