Young Mustangs squad set to hit the local links
Out of the 25 girls in the Costa Mesa High girls golf program, 18
have never touched a golf club before. So first-year coach Tom
Baldwin, who is serving as the head girls golf coach for the first
time after being the school’s football coach last year, has his work
cut out for him. Baldwin enlisted former coach and old friend John
Clurry as his assistant.
“I don’t expect to win it all, but I don’t expect to come in
last,” said Clury.
Clury met Baldwin when he was 10 years old and played football for
him at Santa Ana Valley High. The two have been friends ever since.
The duo leads a Costa Mesa squad that features returners Abbie
Dyvig, Melissa Pardue, Sarah Grabarsky, Maggie Moth and Christy
Gregory.
Gregory figures to be the team’s No. 1 golfer for a second
straight season, and Dyvig, a left-handed swinger, is coming on
strong.
“She’s hitting the ball really well,” said Clurry.
Costa Mesa should get a boost from newcomers Shelby Ferris and
Amanda Parent. Cayley Camarillo, Courtney Wright and freshmen Lauren
Borboa, Jamie DePero, Patty Juan and Lindsey Slaney could also
contribute.
“They are working hard and improving,” said Baldwin. “I’ve never
coached girls golf before. I don’t know if we’re good or not, but I’m
looking forward to it. They are really fun to coach. They listen to
criticism well.”
Estancia is the front-runner in the Golden West League. Costa Mesa
hopes to compete with the rest of the teams for a playoff spot.
“From what I’ve heard, Estancia is the team to beat,” said Clury.
“The rest of the teams could be similar to us, so we have a chance.”
