Estancia shooting for first league title

The Estancia High girls golf team has finished as high as second

place in the Golden West League under Coach Art Perry, but hasn’t

been able to get over the hump. However, with seven returning

letterman and three All-Golden West League returners, this could be

the year the Eagles take home the league title.

“I see us being on top,” said Perry, who believes his team can

edge out Orange and Ocean View highs for the Golden West League

title. “We’re looking to win our league, advance out of the CIF

playoffs and have girls go to the CIF Individuals.”

Estancia has lofty goals because of its big three of Lina You,

Bridgett Gleason and Carolyn Clements, whom Perry ranks as three of

the best players in the league.

“You is long on her drive and she has a great short game,” said

Perry of the All-Golden West League returner. “She’s a great

all-around player. Gleason is physically strong and has a good short

game like You.”

Clements transferred last year from Corona del Mar. She had to sit

out last season because of transfer rules. Now she gives Estancia a

fearsome threesome along with You and Gleason.

“Last year those three girls all played around a 41 average for

nine holes,” said Perry. “And they are a lot better this year.”

The talent doesn’t stop there for Estancia. All-Golden West League

selection Lauren Cushing returns for her third year in the program.

Perry says she’s an accurate driver and a solid all-around player.

Senior Lauren Donner, a third-year letterman, along with juniors

Josie Flores and Avery Williams, sophomore Taylor West and freshman

Kiopelani Gyzen give Estancia quality depth behind its top three

players.

Could this be the best Estancia girls golf team Perry has ever

coached?

“I would say so,” said Perry, who will be entering his 19th season

as the Estancia High boys golf coach. “We have three real strong

players and four or five others that can play well.”
