SAVE THE TIRE REEF
Did you know there’s an artificial reef made of tires and plastic
off the Newport Pier? There is, but if the Coastal Commission gets
its way, the reef won’t stay.
Hear an update on the reef’s status from Rodolphe Streichenberger,
who created the reef and challenged the constitutionality of the
Coastal Commission at the state Supreme Court earlier this year.
Streichenberger will discuss the reef project at a meeting of
Speak Up Newport.
A reception is planned for 5 p.m. Wednesday, with the program
starting at 6 p.m., in the Commodores’ room of the Newport Beach
Yacht Club, 1099 Bayside Drive. For more information, call (949)
224-2266.
OH, SAY, CAN YOU SEE?
History records that Francis Scott Key penned “The Star-Spangled
Banner” on Sept. 13 and 14, 1814, after watching America prevail
during a British raid at Fort McHenry.
This week, under the National Anthem Project, schools nationwide
will hold events to celebrate the song.
At 8:10 a.m. at Sonora Elementary School, a second-grade chorus
will sing the song and recite the pledge of allegiance. Councilwoman
Katrina Foley, the parent of two Sonora students, will give a speech.
Sonora Elementary School is located at 966 Sonora Road, Costa
Mesa. Call (714) 424-7955 for information.
