While Edison and Marina both opened their prep football season a week
ago, the 2005 campaigns for Ocean View and Huntington Beach start
this weekend.
Ocean View begins the Dean Yoshiyama era tonight when the Seahawks
battle Garden Grove Santiago at Garden Grove High.
On Friday, Huntington Beach will travel to the same location to do
battle with Los Amigos in the season opener for both schools.
Also Friday, Edison has another tough task, as it travels to play
San Clemente. Marina will be at Capistrano Valley.
A look at the matchups:
Tonight
Ocean View vs. Santiago
o7(at Garden Grove High, 7 p.m.)
f7It’s a new beginning for Ocean View football, as the Seahawks
will play for the first time under new head coach Dean Yoshiyama.
“We’re excited to get started,” Yoshiyama said during a recent
practice session at the school.
The Seahawks went 1-9 last year, losing their final seven games.
They welcome back four starters -- three of whom played defense --
from the 2004 team.
They’ll take on a Santiago squad that went 6-4 in 2004. One of the
Cavaliers’ six victories was a 48-21 decision over Ocean View in last
year’s season opener.
Friday
Huntington Beach vs. Los Amigos
(at Garden Grove High, 7 p.m.)
Huntington Beach gave one of its most stirring performances of the
2004 season when it faced visiting Los Amigos in the season opener
for both teams.
The Division I Oilers spotted the Lobos a 21-0 lead, then stormed
back in the second half to earn a 21-21 tie. That propelled
Huntington to a 4-0-1 record in nonleague play.
After that start, the Oilers dropped five straight to end the
season.
They enter the 2005 season with five returning starters on each
side of the ball, including all-league selections Mitch Roemer and
Jordan Marquette.
Los Amigos finished second in the Garden Grove League last year
and won a first-round Division IX playoff game. The Lobos are ranked
No. 6 in the CIF-Southern Section Division IX preseason poll.
Marina (0-1) vs. Capistrano Valley
(at Capistrano Valley High, 7 p.m.)
Marina opened the season with a defeat by host Los Osos of Rancho
Cucamonga, 34-6, on Sept. 2.
The Vikings took a 6-0 lead on Los Osos when Victor Rancour and
Josh Martinez hooked up on a 21-yard touchdown pass, but they
couldn’t score again.
This is the season opener for Capistrano Valley, which went 5-5 in
2004. The Cougars, a Division II school, finished second in the South
Coast League and defeated Marina in 2004 by an 18-6 score.
Edison (0-1) vs. San Clemente (1-0)
(at San Clemente High, 7:30 p.m.)
Edison travels for the second time in as many weeks to start the
2005 season.
The Chargers opened the season Sept. 2 in Hawaii and suffered a
21-13 loss to defending Division I state champion Kamehameha.
Edison played the game without starting quarterback Brian Shrock.
Receiver Jimmy Flanagan had 113 yards for the Chargers and caught a
touchdown pass from Nick Crissman.
San Clemente opened its season Sept. 2 with an easy 32-6 victory
over visiting Crawford of San Diego.
Mike Cook and Brad Curtis split time at quarterback for the
Tritons. Cook threw for 113 yards and a pair of scores, and Curtis
threw for 44 yards and another score.
Edison won last year’s meeting between the schools, 28-13.
In preseason CIF polls, Edison was ranked No. 2 in Division I, and
San Clemente earned a No. 6 ranking in Division II.
