Two-minute drill
Corona del Mar High’s 26-6 nonleague football victory over Estancia
Friday at Orange Coast College prompted some nostalgic thoughts from
four Sea King assistant coaches.
“Our whole offensive staff played at Estancia,” said former Eagle
Tony Naranjo, CdM’s co-offensive coordinator.
The other former Eagles working for the Sea Kings are: Miguel Romo
(offensive line), Jeremy Osso (co-offensive coordinator) and Frough
Jahid.
“It’s kind of cool to see my old freshman football coach, Art
Perry [still on staff at Estancia, where he coaches the boys golf
team],” Naranjo said.
* Costa Mesa will likely be without senior Evan Hunter until it
begins Golden West League play against Estancia Oct. 7, Coach Jay
Johnson said before Friday’s 30-0 loss at Brea Olinda.
Hunter, a two-way starter at receiver and corner last season, is
still recovering from June shoulder surgery to tighten loose
ligaments.
Johnson said Hunter has practiced, but the shoulder remains tender
and the head coach wants to err on the side of caution. Johnson
considers the 5-foot-9, 160-pound Hunter the quickest player on the
team.
* Emotions among players run high before any game, but, perhaps,
even more so before the season opener. This was illustrated when the
Estancia players began jumping up and down in a bunch near their
sideline moments before kickoff Friday at OCC.
One player caught near the outskirts of the pack, who shall remain
nameless, was knocked on his back by the momentum of a teammate
charging toward the congregation.
* Sage Hill School newcomer Zach Milder, a senior, made his debut
in Friday’s 41-8 nonleague victory over visiting Fairmont Prep.
Milder, who attended the school last year but did not play
football, started at wide receiver, safety and place-kicker.
The 5-foot-9, 140-pounder is a prime example of how Sage’s success
last season -- a 7-4 mark that included the program’s first trip to
the CIF Southern Section playoffs -- sparked more interest in the
program, Lightning Coach Tom Monarch has said.
Milder was key in helping the defense hold a shutout until the
Huskies scored a touchdown with 2:02 remaining.
* Costa Mesa failed to score in a game for the first time since a
22-0 loss to Laguna Beach in 1997.
* Though Costa Mesa Coach Jay Johnson had several areas of concern
regarding his team’s season-opening performance, penalties were not
one of them. The Mustangs committed just one infraction -- a false
start in the first quarter.
* For the first time in recent memory, the Estancia uniforms
feature the last names of the players above the numbers on their
backs.
* The Estancia helmets are adorned with the scowling eagle logo
used by the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Eagles’ helmets are a tad lighter than the burgundy-shaded
jerseys. Coach Brian Barnes said the helmets are painted Oklahoma
red.
* Johnson said his players need to drink more water during games
to maintain energy and prevent cramps. Seven Mustang starters played
offense and defense in Friday’s season-opening setback.
