Senior All-American Dreason Barry scored four goals in two games to
lead the UC Irvine men’s water polo team to a pair of victories to
begin the Triton invitational at UC San Diego Saturday.
Barry scored four times while junior Cole Bitter added three goals
and sophomore Andrew Dunn two in UCI’s 10-6 triumph over UC Davis in
the first game under new head coach Marc Hunt.
Dunn and junior Tim Hutten each tallied two goals to go with
Barry’s four in the Anteaters’ 9-2 victory over UC Santa Cruz in the
second game, sending them into a championship semifinal at 10:15 a.m.
today.
Rojas races to 5th
* CROSS COUNTRY: Vanguard University’s Humberto Rojas, a transfer
from Orange Coast College, finished fifth overall to lead the Lion
men’s cross country team to seventh-place in the Cal State Fullerton
Invitational Saturday at Craig Regional Park.
Rojas, a two-time state cross country champion at OCC, finished
the 8K race in 26 minutes, 26 seconds, followed by teammates Matt
Meyer (18th, 27:26), Travis Hartanov (35th, 27:53), Ryan Allen (68th,
28:41) and OCC transfer Jason Thomas (93rd, 29:33).
The Vanguard women placed eighth among 24 teams with freshman
Grace Jepngetich of Kenya placing 12th among 225 competitors in the
5K race in 19:19. The Lions’ top five included Rebecca Sopp (29th,
19:50), Laura Bowman (36th, 19:59), Christol McDonald (66th, 20:42)
and Kaylynn Gallo (84th, 21:04).
Lions undefeated
* VOLLEYBALL: Vanguard University’s women’s volleyball team is off
to its best start in program history (8-0) following two victories
Saturday to conclude the Crowne-Plaza Labor Day Volleyball Festival.
The host Lions earned sweeps over Bethany, a 30-15, 30-17, 30-27 triumph, and Westminster (Utah), 30-20, 30-27, 30-26. Kim Wynn
tallied 17 kills against Bethany and added 16 against Westminster
while Keri DeHaas finished with a team-high 27 digs in the two
matches.
Vanguard answers
* SOCCER: The Vanguard University women’s soccer team scored five
second-half goals and downed the Oregon Institute of Technology, 5-1,
in the Classic Tournament at Northwest Nazarene in Nampa, Idaho.
Junior Heather Hutton scored one goal and added three assists
while senior Heather Tape tallied two scores and one assist.
Sophomores Emilia Miller and Bethany Monka each added one goal for
the Lions (2-1).
UC Irvine falls in 4
* VOLLEYBALL: Kim McGiven slammed a match-high 34 kills to lead
visiting Santa Clara to a 30-32, 31-29, 30-22, 30-28 women’s
volleyball victory over host UC Irvine in the UCI-Holiday Inn Sunset
Classic Saturday night.
Amanda Vazquez led the Anteaters (3-3) with 17 kills while
Jennifer Moser added 13 digs.
Hosseini advances
* SURFING: Newport Beach resident Erica Hosseini advanced to
today’s round of 32 following her performances Saturday in the Hello
Kitty Boardfest off the Huntington Beach Pier.
Hosseini won her heat (9.27 points) over Florida’s Falina Spires
in the four-star, World Qualifying Series event.
The round of 32 begins at 8 a.m. today.
