Local police captain to lead UCI force

Capt. Paul Henisey, a 29-year veteran of the Newport Beach Police

Department, will retire Monday to take on a new role as chief of

police at UC Irvine.

“It’ll be different from the standpoint that it’s an academic

environment,” Henisey said.

Henisey began testing for the job in May and was notified in early

August that he had been chosen for the position. He will be sworn in

at a ceremony held Tuesday at the university.

Henisey said he’s looking forward to the new challenge but said

his work with the Newport Beach Police Department has prepared him

well.

Henisey steps into his new position during a tough time for the

university. A UCI fraternity was suspended following the death of a

19-year-old Cal Poly Pomona student. Kenny Luong of Rosemead died

Tuesday of head injuries sustained during a weekend football game

with members of the Lambda Phi Epsilon fraternity.

Sobriety checkpoint set for tonight

The Newport Beach Police Department will conduct a sobriety

checkpoint from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. tonight at the intersection of East

Coast Highway and Irvine Terrace.

Sobriety checkpoints deter people from driving while intoxicated

and are intended to reduce the number of alcohol-related accidents on

the roadways, police said.

The checkpoint will be clearly marked and vehicles will be

randomly selected. Drivers will be greeted by a police officer and

given an informational brochure on the effects of drunk driving.

Blood drive to aid hurricane victims

The Newport Beach Lifeguards will hold their second blood drive of

the summer from 2 to 8 p.m. today at lifeguard headquarters at the

base of the Newport Beach pier.

In addition to giving blood, the American Red Cross is asking the

public to make monetary donations to assist the victims of Hurricane

Katrina.

Each year the lifeguards’ blood drive provides more than 100 units

of blood.

Because blood cannot be stockpiled, donors are needed regularly.

Sign up for to give blood by calling the Newport Beach Fire

Department at (949) 644-3046.

Donors must bring picture identification.
