Surfrider Celebrity Surf Jam is set

Music and surfing will combine to form the first Surfrider

Foundation Celebrity Surf Jam on Sept. 11 at the Huntington Beach

Pier.

Well-known musicians and professional surfers will make up the

roster for the event, which will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Musicians scheduled to participate include Brandon Boyd, Mike

Einziger and Ben Kenney of the band Incubus, Peter DiStefano of Porno

for Pyros and Jim Lindberg of Pennywise.

Four-time Olympic medal-winning swimmer Aaron Peirsol will

participate, as will professional surfers Jeff Deffenbaugh of

Huntington Beach -- who will co-produce the event, event co-chair Pat

O’Connell, Rob Machado, Alex Grey and Dane Reynolds.

The event is co-chaired by the X-Games and ABC Sports commentator

Sal Masekela.

Local hockey player makes USA squad

Chanda Gunn of Huntington Beach has been named to the 2005-06 U.S.

Women’s National Team, as announced by USA Hockey.

The team was selected following the 2005 USA Hockey National

Women’s Festival, held August 18-24 at the Lake Placid Olympic

Center. The Festival featured 40 of the top women’s players in the

nation.

The national team, composed of a 22-player roster, will

participate in the Hilton Family Skate to 2006 Tour in preparation

for the XX Olympic Winter Games, to be held Feb. 11-20, 2006, in

Torino, Italy.

Gunn is one of 12 players with U.S. Women’s National Team

experience to join the team.

Also on the squad are four players who captured gold and silver

medals with U.S. Olympic women’s ice hockey teams in 1998 and 2002:

defenseman Angela Ruggiero and forwards Tricia Dunn, Katie King and

Jenny Potter.

Also on the 2005-06 team are defensemen Courtney Kennedy and

forwards Julie Chu, Natalie Darwitz and Krissy Wendell, each a member

of the 2002 U.S. Olympic women’s ice hockey team.

“We are excited with the talent assembled for our U.S. Women’s

National Team,” said Ben Smith, U.S. women’s national and Olympic

team head coach, in a press release. “The Festival featured a deep

pool of players and really highlighted the tremendous development of

women’s hockey in the United States.”

Eighteen of the 22 members on the 2005-06 U.S. Women’s National

team were on last year’s squad that won a first-ever gold medal at

the 2005 International Ice Hockey Federation Women’s World

Championship.
