Dent claims opener
Corona del Mar High product Taylor Dent advanced to the second round
of the men’s singles draw at the U.S. Open following a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1,
6-4 victory over Lars Burgsmuller of Germany Wednesday in Flushing
Meadows, N.Y.
Dent, seeded 25th, hit 44% of his first serves and tallied 18 aces
in the victory.
He will face Nicolas Almagro of Spain the second round Friday.
Dent’s best finish in seven U.S. Open’s came in 2003 when he reached
the fourth round.
UCI’s schedule changes
* VOLLEYBALL: In the light of the damage caused by Hurricane
Katrina, Southern Mississippi will be unable to compete in the
Holiday Inn-Costa Mesa Sunset Classic hosted by UC Irvine Friday and
Saturday at Crawford Court.
UCI faces UNLV at 7:30 p.m. Friday while UNLV takes on Santa Clara
at 11 a.m. Saturday. UCI faces Santa Clara at 7:30 that night.
With the reduction in the number of matches, tournament passes
will no longer be sold. Adults are $7, while children and seniors are
$4.
UCI will collect donations at school-sponsored athletic events
this weekend to aid Red Cross relief efforts in response to the
damage caused by Hurricane Katrina. A UCI representative will be
present at the following events to accept donations: Friday and
Saturday women’s volleyball tournament; UCI College Classic men’s
soccer tournament Saturday and Monday (UCI faces North Florida at
7:30 p.m. Saturday, and Illinois-Chicago at 1 p.m. Monday); and
Sunday’s 1 p.m. women’s soccer match against USC.
All funds will be donated to the Red Cross.
