Eagles soar at Santa Ana
Estancia High golf coach Art Perry and members of the Eagles’ boys
golf team volunteered their time to help with operations at Tuesday’s
Jones Cup at Santa Ana Country Club.
Christopher “Storm” Hagen, Kyle Jones, Andrew Ayala, Kyle Anderson
and Matt Kirchberg held leaderboards and did other tasks throughout
the tournament, while Gordon Bowley also volunteered his time.
* Mesa Verde Country Club head pro Tom Sargent chipped in from the
fringe on the 418-yard par-4 16th hole for his lone birdie of the
day. Sargent’s chip was from about 30 feet out and below the pin.
* Mesa Verde Country Club senior champion Bryan Rolfe hit a
300-plus-yard drive and reached the green in two on the 503-yard
par-5 ninth hole. He tallied three birdies on the front nine.
* Santa Ana Country Club head professional Geoff Cochrane clocked
a 301-yard drive on the 473-yard, par-5 18th hole, slightly drawing
the ball over the water and sand trap on the dogleg-left layout. He
said he has hit drives that far on the hole a few times. Cochrane
outdrove his teammates off of several tees Tuesday.
* Towersey prevented Santa Ana’s second bogey on the par-3 second
with a deft blast from the left bunker. The ball nestled two feet
from the cup and Santa Ana’s 21-time women’s club champion sank the
putt.
* Big Canyon women’s champ Martha Redfearn had a small but
determined caddie: her 9-year-old son, Chad. Chad pulled his mom’s
clubs throughout most of the day, occasionally agreeing to help from
bystanders or from father Wayne. Steve Williams, eat your heart out.
* Big Canyon senior player Dave Quisling was a last-minute
addition to take the place of senior champ Danny Bibb. Word on the
course was Bibb had to help a daughter move to college.
* Former Big Canyon champ Danny Lane, filling in for this year’s
top golfer, Mike Carpenter, was familiar with the Jones Cup pressure.
He won the event in 2002, back when it was teams of two. “I think it
was a little more relaxed, just because you have other players to
rely on,” he said of the new, five-person format.
