Gaels top Anteaters in OT
UC Irvine rallied twice to tie the game and force overtime but host
Saint Mary’s College benefited from an own goal to win the women’s
soccer game, 3-2, Sunday afternoon in Maraga, Calif.
UCI freshman Megan Ortiz beat Saint Mary’s goalkeeper Andrea Lee
one-on-one for her first career goal off a through pass from
sophomore Frankee Kelly in the 79th minute to send the game into
overtime.
In the first overtime period, Saint Mary’s scored the game-winning
goal when Nikki Schrey’s cross to Katie Frattone was deflected by a
UC Irvine defender into the goal in the 96th minute.
Junior Britney Webster scored her second goal of the season in the
28th minute on a direct kick from 32 yards out to tie the score at
1-1.
The Gaels, who took a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute as Gen Hollis
scored from 40 yards out, regained the lead when Katie Frattone
scored from 12 yards out in the 53rd minute.
UCI, which defeated San Jose State in Friday’s opener, fell to
1-1, while St. Mary’s improved to 1-1.
Saint Mary’s outshot the Anteaters, 16-13.
UCI freshman Erin Henry had four saves for the visiting Anteaters.

* SOCCER: Visiting Long Beach City College scored once in each
half to earn a 2-0 nonconference women’s soccer victory over Orange
Coast Sunday in the season opener for both teams.
The Pirates were outshot, 9-4, though they were not without their
scoring opportunities.
Long Beach scored in the 10th minute when the Vikings collected a
rebound and Stephanie Leotti scored from 15 yards out. The visitors
added their second goal in the 76th minute.
Kaitlyn Schuesler gave the Pirates a big lift after coming on
early in the opening half and kept pressure on the Long Beach defense
the rest of the game.
Schuesler was responsible for the best scoring chance for the
hosts. Christine Crosson began the threat by winning the ball with a
tackle at midfield. Crosson then fed Schuesler at the top of the box
on the right side and Schuesler sent a shot that was the Viking
keeper stopped just inside post.
