ON THE AGENDA
Here are a few of the issues the council will consider Tuesday
night.
HOMELAND SECURITY FUNDS
The City Council will consider approving $236,758 in State
Homeland Security Grant Program funds for the Fire and Police
departments.
WHAT TO EXPECT
If the council approves the funding, it will be used for emergency
prevention, preparedness and to recover from terrorism events.
Materials that could be procured by the city include radios for first
responders, hazardous materials training course and monitoring
equipment.
PURCHASE OF BUSES
The City Council will consider approving the replacement of seven
Burbank Transportation Service buses, which staff says would be
cheaper to replace.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The council will have a choice of replacing the buses with
gasoline or compressed natural gas models. Replacing buses with
natural gas vehicles costs $77,000 per bus and their gasoline-fueled
counterparts are $55,000 per bus, according to a city report. Staff
suggests that the council choose gasoline-burning buses because of
the lower costs, the expense of converting gasoline chassis to the
natural gas-burning type, the lack of availability of natural
gas-burning fuel tanks, the lack of space in the natural gas buses
and logistical concerns with the availability of natural gas
stations.
CHARTER REVIEW COMMITTEE APPOINTMENTS
City staff is requesting that the City Council appoint members to
the Charter Review Committee.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The council could appoint up to 11 members to the committee, which
will work with an outside consultant to review the city’s charter,
identify needed changes and make recommendations based on needed
changes.
Each council will select one member of the committee from a pool
of candidates, for a total of five.
The remaining six members will be chosen through a vote of the
entire council.
The council has also tentatively agreed to appoint a chairman of
the committee.
