STATE BEACH
RENOVATIONS
Corona del Mar State Beach will get $3.94 million in upgrades,
after the City Council approved a contract with Weeger Bros. Inc. to
build a new concession and lifeguard building, two restroom
buildings, beachfront walkways and walls with seating and a ticket
booth for the parking lot. The contract also includes landscaping and
irrigation system upgrades.
The council agreed the popular state beach is in dire need of
upgrades, because most of its amenities were built in the 1960s and
‘70s and are not adequate for the large number of visitors the beach
now attracts. Councilman Ed Selich was among those to vote against
the project because he wasn’t convinced it was the best use of the
city’s capital improvement funds.
WHAT IT MEANS
Improvements at the beach will start after Labor Day and should be
done by next April or May.
FUEL TANK
REMOVAL
An underground fuel storage tank near City Hall will be taken out
because it could leak, and it is no longer needed, the council
decided. It also might be in the way of plans the council has not
finalized for a new city hall and fire station.
The city will pay Leighton Consulting Inc. $57,400 to remove the
tank.
WHAT IT MEANS
The 12,000-gallon fuel tank will be removed whether or not the
city moves forward with building a new city hall.
LANDSCAPING CONTRACT
The council agreed to hire Park West Landscape Maintenance Inc. to
handle maintenance of city facility landscaping. The company was the
lowest of five bidders, which included the city’s current landscape
maintenance contractor, TruGreen Landscape.
WHAT IT MEANS
The city will pay Park West Landscape Maintenance Inc. $390,315 a
year for three years for upkeep of landscaping at city parks and
facilities.
