Defeated see Red
Code Red, a girls’ under-14 team out of South Coast Soccer, opened up
the season by winning its division at the Andrew Dobransky Memorial
Tournament in San Diego.
The squad went 4-0 in tournament play, winning its first three
matches by identical 2-1 scores.
Code Red 2, Hot Spurs Red 1
Code Red began the tournament with a win over the tournament host.
Following a scoreless first half, Jodi Hwang of Code Red opened up
the scoring on a well-placed penalty kick. Hot Spurs Red quickly
answered with a goal of their own, but Erika Longoria -- on an assist
from Andrea Ecker -- launched what turned out to be the winning goal,
a kick that hit the cross bar and bounced straight down and into the
goal.
Ashley Haprov and Kelly Mitsumori shared goalie duties for Code
Red.
Code Red 2, Hot Spurs White 1
Code Red started slowly and overcame a 1-0 deficit to pull out the
win.
After Hot Spurs White took a 1-0 lead, Rebecca Cruz gave Code Red
the equalizer when she threaded through the defense to score. Alison
Hensley later brought the ball down the middle and dished it off to
Kelly Mitsumori, who scored the winning goal.
Erica Cabibbo and Rachel Pasternak turned in strong defensive
performances in the Code Red backfield.
Code Red 2, Tustin Premier 1
In its final pool play match, Code Red recorded its third 2-1 win
of the tournament.
Kirsten Marony scored on a rebound to provide Code Red with its
margin of victory.
Code Red 4, Hot Spurs 2
In the tournament title game, Code Red came back from a 1-0
deficit to win the championship.
Alison Hensley scored on a solo run to even the score at 1-1. The
play of midfielders Alli Budd, Maylett Roldan and Breanne Justice on
defense didn’t allow the Hot Spurs another goal in regulation play,
nor through two overtime periods.
The match then went to a shootout, and Osiris Ceja, Lauren Hanson
and Jodi Hwang each scored on their penalty kicks.
Code Red goalie Tiffany Van Tress blocked three Hot Spurs shots in
the shootout, and Code Red claimed the championship trophy.
