Green replaces Green

C.K. Green, who guided the Estancia High baseball team for a portion

of the 2002 season, was named head coach of his alma mater a second

time Monday, Assistant Principal Sean Boulton said.

Green, 23, a two-time All-Pacific Coast League infielder who

earned All-Newport-Mesa recognition as an Estancia senior in 2000,

takes over for Jon Green, no relation, who resigned after three

seasons in June.

C.K. Green coached the Eagles through the rest of the 2002 season

following Doug Deats’ resignation three games into the campaign.

Boulton said C.K. Green, who teaches seventh- and eighth-grade

math at TeWinkle Middle School, was one of eight applicants for the

position. The decision was made easier since Green is a teacher and

has been involved with the program the last five years, Boulton said.

Green didn’t coach the last two seasons -- he focused on his

studies instead -- but was the team’s booster club president and

treasurer.

C.K. Green left little question where his priorities lie.

“School comes first,” said Green, whose father, Tim, also coached

Estancia. “Second is having fun on the field and that players are

there because they want to play baseball. I’m out there to guide them

and make them better players.”

Green figures to inherit a team of several returners who helped

the Eagles triple their league victory total of the 2002 and 2003

seasons combined. Of Estancia’s 15 players on the roster to begin

last season, nine were juniors or younger, which included four

sophomores and a freshman.

“I didn’t see a game last year, but I know most of the parents and

kids,” Green, who lives within walking distance of the school in

Costa Mesa, said. “It looks good from what I hear.”

Green said he learned a lot during his first stint as head coach,

including off-field obligations.

“I was only 20, so it was a huge shock,” Green said. “It was just

me and the kids and then all of a sudden I’m the head coach having to

deal with parents, field maintenance and a lot of paperwork. There

was so much more to it you wouldn’t know unless you were the head

coach.”
