month’s United States Amateur golf championship after earning
medalist honors at a sectional qualifying round July 28.
Caton, from Huntington Beach, shot 70-67 -- 137 on the par-72
Southern California Golf Association Golf Course in Murrieta to claim
one of three automatic berths into the U.S. Amateur, scheduled Aug.
22-28 at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa.
Caton tallied a 4-under 32 on the back nine during his second
round, carding birdies on three straight holes (Nos. 15-17). He had
six birdies in the round.
UC Irvine junior Brian Edick is the first alternate into the
tournament after his 3-over 147 (72-75) at Bear Creek Golf Club
Thursday.
Caton missed qualifying for match play at last year’s U.S. Amateur
at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y.
DuBois co-medalist
* Newport Beach resident Don DuBois earned co-medalist honors and
a spot in September’s U.S. Mid-Amateur championship with a 5-under 67
in a qualifying round at Glendora Country Club Monday.
DuBois, who won the California Amateur title in June, was one of
five golfers to gain automatic berths into the Mid-Amateur, scheduled
Sept. 10-15 at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Caton shot 2-under 70 and is a first alternate into the
competition.
Won falls in playoff
* UC Irvine senior Angela Won lost in a playoff to miss the cut
for match play at the U.S. Women’s Amateur at the Ansley Golf Club in
Roswell, Ga., Wednesday.
Won tied for 60th after shooting 154 (80-74) during stroke play to
finish in an eight-person playoff for the final five match-play
spots. Two competitors were eliminated after the first hole before
Won was eliminated following the second hole.
Won is a three-time first-team All-Big West honoree at UC Irvine.
Sapp finishes 58th
* UC Irvine sophomore Garrett Sapp finished tied for 58th at the
17th annual Long Beach Open at Skylinks Golf Course.
Sapp shot a final round of 69 to finish the tournament with a
score of 290 (76-72-73-69). Sapp won titles at the Long Beach men’s
city championship and Long Beach match play championship earlier this
summer.
Former Anteater Vinnie Poncino carded a 294 (73-67-80-74) to
finish 65th.
Sage hires Hogan
* Mike Hogan has been named the boys and girls golf coach at Sage
Hill School.
Hogan was an assistant coach on Sage Hill’s baseball team and
played baseball for Orange Coast College in the 1980s.
Hogan said he will use his baseball background with the golf team.
“I want to help the kids prepare like a baseball pitcher,” Hogan
said. “I want them to try to ride the tram and stay away from the
rollercoaster. I see kids always judging shots they hit. ‘Oh, that’s
a good shot. Oh, that’s a bad shot.’ Like a pitcher in baseball, you
can’t get too emotional or it’ll mess you up on your next swing or
your next pitch. You have to be even-tempered.”
