UC Irvine’s Sapp wins title
UC Irvine’s Garrett Sapp, who will be a sophomore this fall, won the
title of the 80th annual Long Beach match-play championship at El
Dorado Park Golf Course June 19.
Sapp won six straight matches to win the championship, defeating
James Lee, 6 and 5, in the 36-hole final. With the victory, Sapp
qualified for the Long Beach Open at El Dorado Park and Skylinks Golf
Courses July 28-31.
Sapp was a first-team All-Big West Conference selection for the
Anteaters as a freshman and he competed as an individual in the NCAA
West regional.
UCI staff lauded
* HONORS: The UC Irvine Athletics Marketing and Promotions staff
was recognized with four awards by the National Association of
Collegiate Marketing Administrators at its recent conference in Lake
Buena Vista, Fla.
UC Irvine earned top honors for Best Single Newspaper Display Ad
and Best Activation Program with a Sponsor.
The two second-place awards were in: Best Online Promotion and
Best Sponsor Follow-Up Report.
“Again, these honors are attributed to a great group of staff and
interns we have in Anteater Sports Marketing,” said Blake Sasaki,
Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing & Promotions. “They are all
passionate about UC Irvine Athletics and it shows in their work”.
The NACMA Awards are in their third year and are given for
outstanding achievement in marketing and promotions.
Awards were presented in 18 categories with schools competing
against institutions of similar size and conference affiliation.
Lions place 19th
* ATHLETICS: The Vanguard University Athletic Department placed
19th in the Sports Academy Directors’ Cup, as announced last week at
the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA)
Convention. Developed as a joint effort between USA TODAY and NACDA,
the United States Sports Academy Directors’ Cup program is the only
all-sports competition that recognizes the institution in each of the
four categories (NCAA Division I, II, III and NAIA) with the best
overall athletics program. Vanguard finished with 425 points while
fellow Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) member Azusa Pacific
was first with 881 points.
Nearly half of Vanguard’s sports made it to the postseason, with
four competing at the national level and three claiming a top-five
finish. After final tabulations, the Lions made the top-20 for the
first time, improving from last year’s 40th place finish.
Nine Vanguard teams combined to win 201 games or matches in
overall competition and 82 GSAC contests, while earning three
conference championships and sending four teams into national
competition.
