Summer at the ‘Y’: sports, songs, games
The YMCA summer day camp program began June 20 and camps are
filling up fast. Each week of camp is devoted to a different theme
that campers explore through sports, songs, games, crafts, skits,
hands-on activities and field trips. The camp program is open to
children ages 3 to 17 and runs through Sept. 2 at the West County
YMCA in Huntington Beach.
Children can sign up for one week at a time or for the entire
11-week experience. Children 3 to 5 can enroll in the YMCA
pre-kindergarten program, held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Campers in first
through ninth grade will meet new friends, enjoy arts and crafts,
explore nature and embark on weekly field trips from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Extended care is available from 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. at no
additional charge. Campers in 10th to 12th grade can work on
leadership skills in the YMCA Leader in Training program.
All YMCA day camps are accredited by the American Camp Assn.,
which requires low ratios of camp counselors to campers, 18 hours of
training before camp begins and certification in first aid and CPR.
Additionally, all counselors are fingerprinted, drug screened and
must have at least three references to be considered for hire.
Camp costs vary. Financial aid is available for families who
qualify. To register, visit the YMCA website at www.ymacoc .org or
register in person at the West County YMCA, 2100 Main St., Suite 200.
